I’ve been with Home Again for 12 of my pets, countless fosters I’ve taken in, and for over 15 years; I prefer them over other companies because they are the only company to have an anti-migrating mechanism on their chips. While other companies chips lack this mechanism, potentially allowing the chip to migrate into different parts of your animals body,( i.e. their shoulders or ribs) thus making it more difficult to scan and easier to miss in the event that your animal finds themselves in possession of animal control. I’ve never had a Home Again chip migrate. I’ve used 24 hour pet watch and Petlink on 2 of my animals, both chips migrated and we ended up re-chipping with Home Again. I purchased this chip because I recently had my dog spayed through a low cost spay/neuter clinic but I didn’t like the microchip company they offered through their clinic. They agreed to implant this one if I brought it in. If the chip is implanted correctly you should not be able to feel it or even tell it’s there. Your pet won’t notice either. Shipping & delivery was much faster than they said it would be. Product arrived in great condition, sterile packaging, with a tag and the registration paperwork (although you can register by phone or online as well). Once you register your chip with the company (a one time fee of 19.99) it is registered FOR THE LIFE of your animal. There is NO YEARLY FEE. Like Ive said, I’ve been using their services for 15 years. I’ve only paid ONCE for all my pets and countless fosters over the years. I’ve moved & updated info plenty of times. There is no yearly registration charge. I’m stressing this as there seems to be a lot of confusion out there about yearly registration vs the optional add on features the company offers. There are other amenities you can purchase yearly for an additional 19.99 a year but again, these are optional and opting out of purchasing them does NOT affect your registration status. They are just packages the company sells to increase profits. I have personally found no use for anything other than the registration. If you sell or transfer ownership of a pet, you can (and should) transfer owner information on the chip as well. You contact Home Again and they send you the transfer of ownership paperwork (similar to a car title). The most important thing is to always keep your information updated, or the chip is useless. Once the chip is implanted there are only 3 things you need to do: 1) make sure the microchip is registered; 2) ask your veterinarian to scan your pet's microchip at least once per year to make sure the microchip is still functioning and can be detected; 3) keep your registration information up-to-date. (So many people forget this part) *If you've moved, or if any of your information (especially your phone number) has changed, make sure you update your microchip registration in the manufacturer's database as soon as possible.*
Chances are, you are planning to use this kit to microchip your animal yourself and skip the vet visit. If so, you are going to be very pleased. It is super easy to use - implanting the chip takes just a few seconds and registration takes about 5 minutes online (the chip also comes with a snail-mail paper registration form if you prefer). You may feel a little squeamish about the process but as long as you implant the chip quickly and confidently, your animal will probably barely notice. I just chipped my 7 week old Lab puppy and she barely even flinched. It would be a good idea to have somebody hold the animal still so you have both hands free - the needle is EXTREMELY sharp and you don't want to risk jabbing too deep or potential jabbing yourself.
NOTE: As other reviewers have mentioned, once you have registered the chip ($19.99 as of 02/24/2017) you can cancel the automatic renewal but your pet's registration will remain active for life; the annual subscription buys you some additional services that you may or may not find useful/beneficial.
It's a beefy needle (12 gauge), no way around that. But he was so focused on the food we were feeding him he didn't even flinch, so I'm assuming it's fairly sharp.
So fun to tell people we did it ourselves - it gets them really riled up (and I love to stir the pot). There is this assumption that the "average person" is not really capable of doing anything outside the singular thing they do for a living.
Just have to be smart about it - do a bit of YouTube research. Make sure you thoroughly saturate the fur with alcohol (scrub a bit - will not kill him). Don't take the syringe out of it's wrap until you are 100% ready to use it (the longer you keep things clean, the less chance of any infection). And wash your hands a few times before (i.e. wash hands, get stuff ready, wash hands, disinfect injection site, wash hands again, inject, remove needle and apply a tiny bit of pressure for about 10 seconds (no harm) and then wash hands again. Needle does not separate from plunger, so it all has to go in a sharps disposal (hit up any place that sells or does medical stuff - they will have a place to dispose of sharps). DO NOT throw in garbage (if garbage man gets poked he will probably come burn your house down).
to clarify how home again works. You only need to pay the 1 time enrollment fee. They will make it sound like you have to pay an annual fee for the upgraded service. You just tell them you don't want the upgrade. That's it. I can tell you this is 100% true and will never change. They are one of the only microchip companies that are available 24 hours a day. They are a great company. the only reason I am rating this a 1 is in hopes that people who read the comments as a 1 understand and see the truth.Though I agree it is bad sales tactics and very misleading, the bottom line is there is no annual fee for basic service!
The size of the needle is huge which worried me but I had my vet do the insertion for my two pups and according to him microchip needles are a bit bigger. My younger pup didn’t even seem to notice it, but my older one yipped. Comes with a couple nice barcode stickers of the microchip number so your vet can put one in your dogs file and you can put one in your own records.
I did end up actually using the homeagain website to register my two, and it does automatically sign you up for auto renew but it’s easy enough to turn off from your profile.
I’ll admit I normally research EVERYTHING for days if not weeks before I buy it. However when I bought this chip I didn’t do the right research. I looked at prices and what information the chip gives. Which this is exactly what I wanted. What I didn’t think to look into was who can READ the chip 🤦🏼♀️. I have a Siberian husky that likes to run off. I got her from animal control because her first owners got tired of looking for her. When I told my vet I had a chip to put in they didn’t know you could buy them on Amazon lol. Now they claim to never have heard of HomeAgain and they couldn’t read the chip. They can only read chips that match their reader. (Theirs was $70) I called animal control and asked them. Not only had they heard of them they are quite popular and easy to read. You just need a universal reader. I figure if my dog gets lost, what are the odds they are taken to MY vet? And if she is they’d probably recognize her. Most people take animals to animal control. And they recognize her there too lol. (I was very excited to get her.) I guess my point is if your vet says they can’t read the chip, just try and think if you found a lost pet where would you take it? And at least in Michigan if they get a lost pet at the vet, they turn them over to animal control if they can’t find a chip.
My microchip arrived without defect and was easily inserted under my miniature poodle's skin. She didn't even flinch, which I found very impressive, even though the needle looked quite wide and a little blunt, to my untrained eye. I also really enjoy the external tag, which I keep on my keychain -- it'll be easy to locate her chip number if she ever goes missing.
As many other reviews have said, there is no need to register the product with HomeAgain; I registered under two other services, one of which was free, and that works just fine. Very glad to have this.
