It's worth stating that this is my first and only set of picks so I haven't been able to directly compare this set to any others, HOWEVER, having said that, I believe this review still stands.
I've just recently become interested in lock picking and having done some quick research it appears that SouthOrd and this set specifically is highly recommended for beginners in a lot of lock picking corners of the internet, hance my choice. And a good choice it was.
Pick Quality: Sturdy from base to business end, as they should be seeing as they're made from stainless steel. They're far stiffer than I expected, which is nice. Looking at a lot of sets on Amazon, you'd think a lot of them are flimsy and flexible, and I'd guess most cheap ones are, but not this set. This is, as most of the lockpicking community seems to agree, great value for money! I'm sure there are better sets priced at over £100, but for this price, I doubt anything better exists.
Case Quality: Real Leather. I can smell it. Mmmmmm. Enough said.
Cons: Though to say. I suppose if I HAD to play devils advocate, I'd say the packaging could have been nicer...but eh, I'd rather have the lower price than waste another cardboard box for packaging. But there you go, a "con".
This is very good starter or backup set of picks. It comes with all the (in my opinion) "important" picks, some tension wrenches, and a good case. The rubber handle covers come separate, so you can put them on if you choose -- I like this, as I prefer to not have the covers on the hook picks but I do like them on the rakes. All in all, a good set for the price. Here are a few things to be aware of, though:
1. It does not come with a top-of-the-keyway tensioner. 2. The picks are a little thicker/heavier than I like, and not as flexible. 3. If you put the rubber handle covers on all the picks, it will be a very tight fit in the case.
having just got into lock sport i thought i would give southOrd a try as there reputation is good. the picks need a bit of finishing but after that are ok .the city rake works well the single diamond does not realy fit many of my uk euro cylinders its rather tight . i`m unsure what these picks are made of but it must be some soft metal i assumed it would be hard steel ,after using one of the pick/rake the "W" rake showed signs of cracking ! just where the "w" joins the main shaft i stopped using the whole set as i dont want any of the picks to break off when i`m using them., this rake is used for "zipping "the lock so is yanked out of the lock so to shock the pins to the shear line. to be honest i did expect better from southOrd i will give there products a wide birth now as the quality doesnt seen all that good.
The PXS-14 is a great little value for money set with a few of the more common picks included. A great little cheap set for picking padlocks. The picks are quite strong and come with a good range of tension tools too. The leather wallet feels cheap and i struggle with the zip sometimes (i think its too big for the little corners it goes around) but that's not i real problem, I didn't buy the set for the zip!. Included in the set was hard rubber handles separate from the picks, some of these were a right struggle to put on the picks, I was actually worried about bending / snapping the picks but this didn't happen and once on, they wouldn't move.
I wanted a good a set as possible without paying for gimmicky practice locks but at a cost effective price. I thought these would be ok but 3 of the supplied rubber handles were split on arrival and the bag is really too small to hold all the picks without a struggle. The tension bars and the picks seem ok. Might have been better to buy a really cheap set..... Delivery was very fast - ordered on the Saturday and they were delivered in Belgium on the Tuesday just a shame the product wasn’t better made
Excellent set of picks, very nice material and doesn't cut into your fingers while picking. Only thing the set needs is a bogota and top of keyway tension tool, then it would be complete - in my opinion.
Excellent bit of kit. From delivery to finding old locks and picking a standard door 5 pin Yale lock was 5 minutes. After 2 years of watching lock picking videos on Youtube (Bosnia Bill) I decide to go for it. Great hobby which has lead onto helping friends with lock problems.
Bought these as my first venture into lock picking. They feel pretty sturdy - I read a couple of reviews that said they were flimsy, however I can’t imagine breaking them in practice. The handle covers make them comfortable to use for extended periods while learning - they come in a separate pouch and you fit them yourself. There’s a range of different shapes of which I’ve found the gentle swept curve one to be most useful so far. There are 4 tension bars one thin, one with a twisted handle and two slightly heavier ones. It would have been nice to have one with a shorter tip possibly to use on the side of the keyway where the pins are, but not essential for me as a beginner. I’ll extend my range of tools as I get more proficient. The case is nice although it would be nice if it would open out and lay flat so you could have the tools laid out as you are using them - currently it tries to go back to a closed position - maybe with time and use the spine will soften and allow it to lay flat. Maybe a tool-roll type case would be better? Anyway I’m very satisfied with the set - they’ve worked well with my first batch of acrylic practice locks. I’ve yet to crack our Main house locks but I’m sure that’s no fault of the set - more my lack of experience!! With hindsight, would I buy the same set again? Yes I would!
