Excellent all around multimeter, if you don't mind the absence of a mA range. Fast, excellent bar-graph, good construction, this is a quality meter. BUT.
That makes me wonder why on earth Fluke went on cutting silly corners with a crappy LCD display. The display is contrasted and crisp if viewed from about 30° down. this is where the peak contrast occurs. So that works fine if the meter is laying flat on a workbench.
On the other hand, if you look at the display straight, like you would if the meter is on it's stand or attached to a magnetic hanger at your eyes level, the contrast is so low that the numbers are borderline unreadable. From any angle upwards, the display is basically blank and useless. It's an issue that my previous $15 multimeter did not suffer from.
Such a basic LCD display is so cheap that I almost resent Fluke for going this route. I am seriously considering returning the unit. At this price tag, it's just unacceptable. Searching about this issue online confirms this is a pretty well known "feature" of the 11x series and going on for YEARS. One would imagine they would have fixed this by now, but they haven't.
I bought this having read the reviews mentioning the viewing angle being bad, and I assumed it was exaggerated or possibly an issue with past manufacturing that was fixed. That doesn't seem to be the case. The screen is not great, certainly not unusable but I find I generally must lay it flat rather than use the built on stand or hanging it. I do not have experience with other digital multi meters but I feel like the screen could be better.
As far as features go it does everything I need it too. The non contact detection is handy and I'm glad I bought this one for it. I also like the auto LoZ function, it is right near the off selection and can detect AC/DC voltage and set the range.
The remaining features are fairly standard I think, it is build ruggedly as you'd expect from a fluke but I've only been using it a week or so at the time of review.
Fluke is a great meter. I had an issue w/ the packaging as it was covered in what appeared to be liquid laundry detergent. When I opened the packaging this is what I smelled and the top portion of packaging had been covered with liquid. The outside packaging was fine so it appear just the unit was packed, not inspected, w/ this detergent spilled on it. Fortunately, it appears the meter was okay.
For a company with a good reputation, the meter lives up to my expectations, but the test leads they include are just plain garbage. Stiff, constantly tangled and the plug contacts have to be jiggled to make contact. Some bean counter went one step too far with these leads and spoiled an otherwise good product.
Best multimeter I have ever owned, was used daily for 6 months until the main selector switch started acting funny. Any selections I turned to will show dashes across the screen, the selector knob must then be pressed down ever so slightly to allow the tool to pick up a reading. Inconvenient because I always have a hand on the multimeter not on my test leads. The meter has always been in a case and I dry locations only. Hopefully I just got a bad one, really the smoothest and most responsive meter I’ve had.
I gotta say that I'm not impressed with the display on this meter. If you have the meter on it's stand and you are working above it the display is so washed-out you can't read it but if you are straight on or below it looks fine. I really like everything else about the meter other than the display.
Its what you expect from Fluke, great quality meter. The three stars is because it does not come with a case, which is ridiculous, and you have to buy the magnetic hanging strap separately for $40. Or buy the exact same strap for $15 from True Energy on amazon.
