To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.
The photos make it look much nicer than it is. The letters and numbers are completely inconsistent, off center, some barely there. Squares have a dingy look to them. What looks like green felt on the inside is just an ill fitting piece of paperboard that doesn’t hold the pieces in place. The latches also don’t stay closed and wouldn’t keep the board closed up reliably. Requested a return about 1 minute after opening. See photos.
Was very concerned about ordering this set after reading all the reviews about this item and the Royal 30 and 36. Having received the item and used it, am very pleased and at this price point, would have tolerated much worse.
Most of the concerns in the reviews are correct, but the impact and expectation seem overblown. Yes the board surface is thin, but would never know without leaning on the board. Yes all the details look hand worked by something short of a professional, but those touches are unique, rustic and endearing and look just like the photos, no surprises there. Yes the green piece holder is cheap and you have to be careful putting the pieces away, but that should be a no brainer for wood pieces. Yes the claps are flimsy, but treat them gently and with intention and they will work just fine and ought to last. Yes it appears if I fling the queen across the room she might lose one of her crown jewels.
I suspect some folks are buying these for children who might abuse any board. This is not the product for that purpose. If you are a sometimes gamer and want a nice portable board with good size and a nice feel, and are willing to take care of your stuff, then what you see in the photos is what you will get. At this price, less than 1/3 the price of an entry-level Staunton set, not sure how you could ask for more. If you play quite more frequently, well you probably ought to invest in a more durable set. If I had to criticize anything, would be the shape of the bishop which we do not like, but it is just as shown.
One small thing not mentioned elsewhere, the set comes in a usable cardstock box, and while it looks and is cheap, it functions to protect the outside surfaces of the board while storing or transporting. Not surprisingly, there is a strong wood-finish odor when first opened, set it outside for an hour or two and you are ready to go.
With the luck of the draw you'll get a decent set. I ordered a few for Christmas gifts and sent all but one back. They must have had children gluing the little cup-shaped tops on the kings and queens! All of them had glue drips running down and were glued on lopsided... even the one I kept, but was desperate for the gift, so kept the best of the mess. Also, have some glue handy to tack down some of the felt bottoms that have loose spots. The set isn't cheap, so shouldn't be so shoddy.
