When I was trying to decide which doctor's kit to buy, I was torn between this one and the Fisher Price medical kit (
Fisher-Price Medical Kit
.) In the end, I actually bought both, and this is why:
The Melissa & Doug kit has the adorable jacket and is a good price for all it contains, but it does not have a blood pressure cuff, which is something my son was really interested in. I was also worried about the stethoscope after reading the other reviews. After both kits arrived, I was very glad I had both!
The Melissa & Doug stethoscope is, indeed, not very usable. It needed a very specific battery, which I found in the jewelry department of our local major retail store that starts with a "W" and ends with "Mart." Then, after putting the battery in, the stethoscope makes this weird, loud coughing sound when you push the button. It's kind of disturbing, actually. My kids (ages 3 and 1), just stared at it for a while, and then my older child said, "Oh, it's sick!" The stethoscope also doesn't stay in my son's ears, so he just wears it around his neck.
There is no storage for all the pieces, either, other than sticking them in all the pockets of the coat. They fall out easily if the doctor's coat is moved, so we ended that pretty quickly. Since I had the Fisher Price kit, we just combined all the medical equipment into that storage bag, and it fit nicely.
The thermometer that comes with the M&D kit is also strange and doesn't resemble any thermometer my kids are used to seeing. I'm very glad I have both kits so the kids can have the best of both worlds! It also makes it easier to have two syringes, since that seems to be the favorite tool, and both kids can have one!
Admittedly, the surgical mask is adorable when I put it on the kids, but they won't wear it for more than a few seconds. Oh, and my son wears a size 5T shirt, and the doctor's coat is a little baggy on him, which I think is great since he can use the coat for even longer!
I've heard good things about Melissa & Doug but this was a bit disappointing. My 2.5 y/o nephew didn't want to wear the coat, which was actually pretty well made. He played with the thermometer, stethoscope, and the shot. He didn't want to wear the stethoscope on his ears but he liked letting others listen. The tools should have a box or kit to be stored in because they won't stay in the pockets very well. The sound on the stethoscope should come through the ears, not at the heart.
Just the other day I was telling someone how Melissa & Doug products are first-rate, and now I have to eat my words.
The doctor's suit is great -- my son (3 y.o.) looks so cute in it. When he opened it on Christmas morning, he gave a big thumbs-up, and exulted, "yes!" Just what a parent wants to hear! He doesn't hang it up, though, and I've noticed it's starting to get a bit wrinkled. I can't see him ironing it....
I'm disappointed with the tools, though -- they're just not up to the Melissa & Doug standard I've come to expect. The stethoscope in particular is flimsy plastic and I'm afraid it's going to break in no time. It didn't work with the first set of batteries (2 x AAA) I put in because the springs don't contact the negative terminal when I put the lid back on. I needed to get a different brand of batteries where the negative terminal extends over the entire end cap of the battery. The other tools are reasonable (the ear scope is also a bit flimsy, but better than the stethoscope).
Despite my reservations, my son loves it, and has had it on a few times, and it's only the day after Christmas.
I purchased the doctor costume for my daughter for Christmas. It comes in a little plastic bag, (similar to what you'd get for your clothes from a dry cleaner), which is nice to keep around so you don't lose any of the accessories.
You do need batteries! The kind you use for a watch in the stethoscope. On that note, you may get very tired of hearing the smoker's cough sound effect that comes out of the stethoscope. It switches back and forth between that and a heart beat. There are little plastic discs on the part of the stethoscope that would traditionally go in your ears, those are a little on the rough side and could hurt if your child stuck them in their ears, I recommend only putting it around their neck. It still can potentially scratch them, it needs to be polished or have a better quality.
The thermometer is just a play one, you click it and it turns to different temperatures.
The plastic on the ear checking instrument is a little on the rough side too where it may go in someone's ear.
The doctor's mask has some velcro on the parts that are elastic that go around your child's ears, I'm not sure if it's my daughter having a smaller head, but this doesn't seem like it would aid too much in adjusting the size, this thing always comes off.
Overall I'd say most of the plastic where it may have been cut by a machine might have some roughness to their edges. But I would still recommend it for price, alternatively you could buy a separate play doctor's kit to go with the jacket, which to me is the main selling point.
Wish I would have gone with a doctor's kit with a case! My kiddo doesn't love the coat, so the medical supplies end up all over the place. Every thing is cute and is fun, especially hearing the heart. The mask is cute, but tiny, and the coat is pretty big, so great for preschoolers. Overall, it's a nice set, but again, I should have gone with a product with a case.
Cute, high quality, but a terrible fit for a small child. It's very wide and not very long. You could easily fit 2 children inside it in terms of width. I would give it 5 stars if it were less wide and a few inches longer. The accessories are cute. Our stethoscope didn't work so I called Melissa and Doug. They immediately sent a new one, no questions asked. They didn't even make me send the old one back.
I don't have much to add to the other reviews, except that the "tools" when put into the pockets carelessly, tended to fall out easily and repeatedly. I also think the quality is not up to Melissa and Doug standards for the higher price their toys bring.
Also, to grandparents out there: If you are thinking of buying this for a grandchild, please consider whether their parent(s) will take the time to be the patient "patient". If not, this will be put away and never used again. It's definitely a "play with me" toy, and not a "play alone" one. While most parents play with their children, not all play pretend well, and that is what is necessary - over and over and over....as well as some knowledge of what the different instruments are used for.
The costume set is of great quality as are all Melissa & Doug products. I would have preferred the the doctor tools be in a carrying case or box. They don't stay in the pockets of the doctor coat and it makes the coat bulky to wear.
I love Melissa and Doug products. However, the pieces in the dress up set fell apart quickly. My daughter is not extra rough on toys. I think it actually got damaged from moving around the toy box. I'm disappointed the pieces broke so quickly.
