This product is falsely advertised as stainless steel and dishwasher safe. The roller, which is that part that makes contact with food, is aluminum. One trip through the dishwasher and it is already beginning to oxidize. This product should be pulled from the market. I will be returning this item.
The good news is this is a heavy duty slicer. It's almost entirely metal, the only plastic parts are a couple of small plastic washers that could in theory be replaced.
The bad news is that the one I received has one knob that doesn't tighten properly. Taking it apart, there are little metal bushings that ride along the inside of the frame (these bushings are what the screws thread into). One of the bushings was machined crooked, so the screw would not tighten square to the frame. If it doesn't tighten square, then it's not getting a full surface to apply friction, and no amount of tightening (even with a pliers) will be enough to get it to stay in place. Considering there are other reviews of this item that list a non-tightening knob problem, I'd say this is likely not an isolated incident. The manufacturer needs to invest in some quality control, or some new tooling equipment.
As far as the wire, it looked a little sloppy (not tight) but seems to work fine. It's offset entirely toward one surface of the slicer which you'd think would make it hard to use, but it doesn't.
I'm docking it three stars for the improperly machined part, because it's either right or it isn't, and this one isn't right.
We bought this to replace our old cheese slicer that recently broke. After receiving this new one, I realized how cheap our old slicer was.
This is a very solidly built slicer that has no problem slicing through large blocks of cheese. I especially love that you can adjust the thickness and make super-thin slices. Our old slicer could only adjust down and make relatively thick slices.
It feels like a quality product when you hold it but it just doesn't work. The cutting wire is off to one side and makes it feel awkward when you use it. The roller is supposed to be adjustable but no matter how tight I try to make it, it just flops around loosely, which means you can only cut very thick slices of cheese.
Wish this was a little bit better quality which I had expected from this manufacturer; the overall product is of a solid build but the cable cutter cannot be tightened or adjusted which makes it flimsy which does not make for a straight smooth cut.
I bought this and paid more than another brand because the picture said Switzerland on it and I try not to buy Chinese. It came to my surprise made in China. It is akward to use because the wire is on the bottom. I have not washed it yet to see if it is dishwasher safe.
The Swissmar cheese slicer looks and feels like a quality product. It is pleasing to look at and has a nice weight in the hand. Unfortunately the main selling point, the adjustability is the weak point. The first slicer Amazon sent was broken; the wire was loose and the right hand adjusting would not tighten. I sent it back. The second one seemed fine, the wire was taught and the adjustment knobs worked. Unfortunately after a few uses the left hand knob became very hard to tighten and required a pair of pliers to tighten it enough to stop it slipping. I would suggest this is not an item to buy online. Better that you are able to test the item before purchase.
Appears to have high quality construction, but I just don't have the hand strength to turn the adjustment screws so that they will stay in place. I have to re-tighten with nearly every slice. Practically useless to me.
