I bought this as a replacement for a 12 year Bodum garlic slicer that cracked when I dropped it. It's not nearly as good as my old slicer. I had a great deal of difficulty using it the first few times because it was so difficult to open, and difficult to tighten it down properly once the garlic cloves were in position. The slices of garlic are also thicker than my old one produced, and it can't handle large cloves or elephant garlic. I will set it aside as a gift for someone else who's not as picky about kitchen gadgets.
Update 4/18/16: I found a Bodum garlic slicer on eBay and bought it. Donated the Chef to Good Will. Good riddance!
This thing is a joke. I hate the smell of garlic on my hands, but I love to cook with fresh garlic so I bought this gadget. It is easily the worst kitchen gadget I've ever purchased. It is so much work to get the thing closed with a very small amount of garlic in the device that it is just more frustration than it's worth. Ugh. Nice idea, crappy product.
After using a similar product I was sold on the garlic slicer but this one does not compare. The compartment is small and only 1/3 of my head of garlic would actually fit in the chamber. I am returning it and going to the competitor website to order the one I had previously used which is no longer available on Amazon.
I found getting the top on took as much as five minutes. It only holds two cloves at most and often doesn't even slice those completely . It drove me crazy just trying to slice enough garlic for a Calebrese Salad and into the trash it went and out came the knife
well, first, it's small. the space inside cannot have over 3 regular size garlic inside. which mean you have to put many times into it - if it can be work normal.
The real issue is, once you have few garlic sticky on the blade, it cannot work any more. Since the inner space is really small, it's very difficult to clean it up. Well, you paid the money then can only use it once and slides 3 garlic total? yes, that's my experience.
If you like "kitchen toy" to play with, this is good choice. 2 garlic each time, then have to clean the blade, repeat. It's take ten times time than just use knife to slides the garlic, and ten times time than clean up the knife.
If you have too much time like to play with your garlic, don't care how long it could take to slides it, and how difficult to clean it up, this is for you.
I, too, had great hopes for this item, but once you actually put any garlic in it, unless it is a TINY clove, the top will not close unless you use a great deal of force. Once you jam a clove or two into it, it does slice them very thinly, but it is such a pain that I will never use it again. If the hopper were deeper and wider it would probably work pretty well.
