4.0 out of 5 starsGood, but not amazing
Reviewed in Australia on 28 July 2020
There is depth in here for sure, and having read the first book I am pushed to continuing on with the series, but not before taking a short break. I find this grand writing style a bit tedious at times and the works a little too arcane. I suppose the author tries to convey a sense of grandeur, and the weight of history through this style, but I find it all a bit confusing at times. It would have had more impact if explained more outright rather than having to dig for explanations in the appendix or online.

Still, a great novel (and excellent audio book), and I’m looking forward to seeing how the next 2 books of the original trilogy compare to this first one.

3.0 out of 5 starsGood, not great

I read this book as part of a bucket list. It has been highly recommended through lots of book lists I have seen. It didn't catch me though. While it wasn't a slog to get through I never felt like I wanted to get home and continue the story either. I could see how a sci fi fan would love the book though, if that is your genre. It was written over 50 years ago now so may be a bit dated.

1.0 out of 5 stars Kindle version has many errors

Just about every page has a quotation mark missing, especially in the middle of paragraphs. It mystifies me that Amazon has such a good platform that they could leverage to crowdsource corrections, but decline to do so.

1.0 out of 5 stars Am I alone in this universe of Dune lovers?
Reviewed in Australia on 30 November 2021
I won't waffle on in the same way that Herbert did in this book but I do have some questions.
WHY? WHY? WHY? is this a cult novel? I'm a prolific reader of sci-fi novels and a smart person but I just can't understand how anyone can wade their way through this quagmire of Herbert's world. Honestly I found this book to be pure torture. It's not a quick read and if you are a fan of constantly having to refer to the glossary to understand what the hell is going on, then you'll love this dreadful read. Sorry to the thousands of fans but I just don't see the appeal of this novel.....Is there a NO STAR RATING?

Lovely hardback edition, but the text is the same error-riddled version. I think I might just type up my own copy, draw my own cover and have done with it. Don't waste your money on this.

I have no idea why this book has so many rave reviews. Let me start by saying I have read many of the greats in Sci-fi: Phillip K Dick, Asimov, Le Guinn, Arthur C Clarke etc. and thoroughly enjoyed them. I expected so much from DUNE due to the utterances of the fans. However, to me this was an ambiguous, over creative to the extent of being dull, self-indulgent work with little regard for the reader.
There were around 60-70 pages out of the 575 that were entertaining. The rest of it was so dull I would rather have put my hand in a box of pain while someone held a poison needle to my neck.
Not enough time spent on objective descriptions yet overdoing it on subjective abstractions. I can honestly say this is the worse science fiction I have read.

1.0 out of 5 stars Read a sample first!

I should have read a sample first. As a proud geek Dune is on my list of need to read and watch to scratch that classic sci fi itch. However, I just could not get into it. The style of writing felt a chore to read for me. It felt like being made to study a text at school or college and never felt enjoyable or fun. I wanted escapism but could never get lost in the text. Maybe I need to watch the film adaptation then give it another go. I guess classic sci fi just isn't my thing. Shame.

1.0 out of 5 stars Just not for me at all

I enjoy sci fis and I have had ‘Dune’ on my Kindle for over a year and never got around to reading it. I read the books before I watch the films so with the current release of the latest ‘Dune’ film, I thought I should start the book. I have not read any other Frank Herbert books before but I had reasonable expectations because this is ‘Dune’, arguably one of the most famous books ever written.

Although no one can argue the importance of ‘Dune’, it felt to me quite dated and I found it a labor to read. I struggled with the prim and scientific language and although I enjoyed the world building, the whole story and prose dragged for me. I struggled to attach or find interest in any of the characters (I didn’t like or relate to Paul at all), I felt that the political intrigue was overdone and I got a bit lost in it all. I was close to a DNF so many times, it was only my stubbornness that I have to finish every book I start that took me across the finish line.

I guess you can’t really say that you read sci fi and have not read ‘Dune’ so I am glad that I have but it was such a slog for me, I won’t bother reading any more of the series, I probably won’t watch the new film version anytime soon either.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed by this book

I'd heard the hype about this in advance of the film coming out in late 2020

It's 679 pages of nonsense, a paper thin plot and bizarre character development and demise

I wouldn't bother wasting your time
