To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.
Other reviews here are more about the concert than the DVD. It's the DVD that is for sale here, not a concert ticket. The actual concert was perhaps the best I've ever seen (or heard).
Having seen the concert tour in Glasgow, I eagerly awaited the dvd and was slightly dissapointed that there was not a bluray version but hey ho!. The SD version arrived and the packaging indicated that not only was the audio missing dts, but had only dd 5,1. Things were looking bad. When the disc was played through an AV amp, the output was in fact DD 2.0. Ironically, Russell tells the audience to 'sing up' as they will be recorded in 5.1!
This might be acceptable for an Al Jolson movie, but is just unacceptable for a recent recording, particularly when the previous dvd's had 5.1.
If you only play the DVD through a TV, disregard these comments. If you have a decent home cinema, probably still buy but expect dissapointment.
First, Russell is amazing in this concert. Perhaps not his best voice (due to its taping at the end of a long tour), but the orchestra and venue is superb. Sound mixing is excellent.
Second, the filming is decent but not great. The camera cuts MUCH too much away from Russell and to the crowd and orchestra. We should be seeing Russell most of the time but the camera is constantly cutting away...annoying.
Finally, this is a PAL DVD. This means that if you are in North America, you MUST have a DVD that can play and out PAL or the DVD won't play. It will play on your PC, but that's not an ideal presentation. The DVD is multi-region though.
This DVD is not as good or as engaging as his Auckland concert, this is an older and more polished entertainer that knows his audience and plays to his strengths.
This DVD is wonderful and a nice follow up to the original from 2003. But.....the sound is not synced to the video and the noticeable lag is very disconcerting to watch. I have returned one copy only to find the second copy is exactly the same as the first and shows the same lag in audio. It is a shame that the entire DVD is flawed in this way because the music is wonderful and Russell Watson's voice is incredible. I will try again by returning my second copy in the hope that another version has been produced with the proper sync between audio and video.
