With 1 input and 4 outputs, this splitter will allow you to use recording devices with items like the Playstation 3 which are normally limited by DHCP. If you use the Elgato HD60 S+ then you know you must turn off HDCP on any console you are trying to play, however, with this splitter you no longer need to do this. I am using this with a 25ft HDMI cable and it works just fine. This splitter will only output one resolution at a time, they do make one that can output different resolutions at the same time; but if you input 1080p you will only get 1080p out of this splitter. It works perfectly for what I wanted, which was to output my HDMI Switch to multiple sources. There is no noticeable quality degradation when using this splitter. I only recently got this, so I have not used this specific 1x4 Splitter for very long, but I was using the smaller 1x2 Splitter by the same company for the last 6-months and have had no issues. The build quality is great for the price, with an all-metal case the splitter feels very solid. It can get slightly warm, but never anything that seems too dangerous. It's a great product.
The video function of this device is pretty good. However if you want to hear anything you are out of luck. After much research people have come up with ways to get the sound to work - not reliably mind you. It involves a lot of plugging of cables in a certain order with devices powered on. I bought this device in order to simplify connecting several outputs to a single source, this process is just too inconvenient. It is simpler to just unplug one cable and plug in another. Very disappointed with this splitter.
I have used a dozen splitters and currently utilize 4 of them in my ham radio digital ATV station. This REI is the only one that I could never get to work after many attempts. Finally, I gave up and ordered a 4 port splitter from Monoprice 4K Blackbird (in a plastic case) which looks cheap compared to this metal case HDS-104 but the Monoprice works on all four ports with no EDID switch set up.
Didn’t fully understand EDID. Nor do I still understand it. The instructions provided were very minimum. I had to research EDID, and until I did that I got the results I wanted. Keep in mind the inconvenience of this process when needing to change the inputs. Overall, good quality after the fact.
