I have generally been happy with this baby monitor, so I purchased the extra camera for it when my wife and I had our second baby a few weeks ago. I wanted to share some thoughts about something I DON'T like about this monitor, particularly as it relates to add-on cameras. First I'll explain briefly the issue we had with our previous monitor, then I'll explain how that ties into what we don't like about THIS monitor.
My wife and I loved our previous baby monitor, but we ran into issues when our second child was born and we started using the monitor with a second camera. That was when we discovered a quirk with the monitor's software. With a single camera we had liked the "Eco mode" in which the monitor's screen and audio would both shut off after about ten seconds of inactivity in our daughter's room, then turn back on as soon as sound was detected. The monitor was silent unless our daughter was making noise, and this probably contributed to the monitor's fantastic battery life. My wife and I liked this feature especially if were watching a movie or something; we would turn the monitor's volume up so that we would easily hear it if our daughter started crying, but it was completely silent otherwise. But when we added a second camera we discovered that when you put the system into "scan mode" (where the monitor alternates between two or more cameras) Eco mode is no longer a possibility. Instead, the monitor cycles through the cameras for ten seconds each, with the screen ALWAYS on and the speaker constantly emitting a white noise. Aside from the noise being annoying, this also meant that the monitor's battery drained MUCH more quickly than before.
That was enough to put me back on the search for a new baby monitor. I selected this one on the basis of a huge number of positive reviews, and overall my wife and I are quite pleased with it. Setup was easy, the image quality is great, and we love the ability to pan the cameras. I also like the ability to select, at the touch of a single button, whether to view one camera, the other camera, or to scan between them.
What I DON'T like is the way the audio works in scan mode. Unlike our previous monitor, the screen on this one can be set to turn off after either 3 or 5 minutes of inactivity, even in the scanning mode. The speaker, however, does NOT turn off, so it is always emitting a white noise. With 2 cameras, this means the speaker alternates between two slightly different white noises every 12 seconds or so. This may not seem like a big deal, but when you are a light sleeper like me, it's really annoying! Also, if one of our little ones starts making noise, a monitor gets our attention much more readily if the speaker was formerly silent than if it was already emitting some white noise.
I'm not sure why the Infant Optics monitor was designed this way. If my children are sleeping quietly, I don't need to hear static white noise transmitted from their rooms. Having said that, I otherwise like this monitor very much, and I can see why it is so popular. I notice Infant Optics responded to customers' complaints about the "out of range" alarm; I wonder if anyone else besides me wishes the speaker could be set to be silent when the screen is off?
Easy to pair and great quality like the one that came with the monitor but not happy with integration of the add on. Basically you either have to choose which camera you want to look at or scan them. So if camera one is scanning and on my sons room but my daughter starts crying I have to wait for it to switch to her room. It is based on a timer and not on noise. So you have no idea what’s going on in the other room when looking at a different room. So a few times my daughter is crying (I can hear her through the wall) but by the time the camera gets to her room she takes a breath to cry again but by the time she cries the camera switches back to her brother and I can’t hear her on the monitor. I wish I played audio from both and would switch to which everyone is making noise. If no noise is present it would scan. In general it’s fine for now
This monitor system was great for almost two years. For the last few weeks though, the buttons on the display unit have been less and less reactive. I had to push each button 2 to 3 times to get any kind of response. Around the same time, I started having problems getting it to charge.I had to use a rubber band to put pressure on the connection. I tried different chargers and even purchased a different battery to see if this would help. It did not. I contacted customer service and was told that it was out of warranty, but they did offer me a decent discount on a new monitor/camera set. I took them up on the offer, since I already had two cameras that still worked perfectly fine. I would have given this unit 5 stars, but I feel that 2 years is not long enough for the price.
Overall a great camera monitoring system. Range was tested up to 100 yds and worked with no issues with antenna up. The temp reading seems to be a bit higher (2-4 degrees) than actual ambient room temp. Purchased an additional camera to go with the system to be able to monitor 2 rooms, the scan feature of having the cameras automatically switch between is a great feature as well is the ability to talk through the camera.
The only CON that I can see is wireless devices in the area can cause a drop in signal to either the camera or the base station. But if you move the monitor or camera away from any WIFI devices a few feet seems to mitigate the issue.
Overall, this camera is great value (good quality for low cost). The picture quality, battery life, and overall ease of use are all excellent.
The reason for holding back on the 5th star is due to the brightness on the night vision mode. The sheets in our baby’s bassinet (and crib) are all white and a highly reflective material, thus the night vision shows up on screen extremely bright (even on the lowest brightness level/setting). Accordingly, the brightness of the night vision causes some eye strain when taking a peek in the middle of the night.
The only other comment/observation I have is related to the built in temperature sensor. Although it seems like a relatively handy feature, and the sensor seems fairly accurate, it’s only useful if your camera is mounted close to the baby’s sleeping area. In our nursery, the camera is mounted near the ceiling, high above the crib. Because of that, the temperature always appears to be 3-5 degrees higher than the actual temp near the baby(Heat rises), so if you intend to place this camera more than 3-5 feet away from the baby, I’d recommend buying an alternative temperature sensor, as you won’t be able to reliably utilize the temperature reading.
Great picture quality in bright and dark rooms, easy to move camera position and has the capability for multiple cameras (we now have 3). We did have an issue with the speaker picking up sound on one of our 3 units however their customer service was quick to assist with troubleshooting issues and then replacement of the product. In researching other reviews/online this issue appears to be unique to us. I will say the battery life in the monitor unit diminishes quickly however we have gotten a replacement and it now lasts us most of the day with monitoring newborn naps (and they sleep a lot!)
Pros: Easy to hook up second camera. Night vision looks good. Picture quality is good. Comes with needed cable. I like that we can have both cameras hooked to the same monitor and that it does not use WiFi Cons: only comes with lens hood, not the extra zoom lens the original came with. I wish the scan feature was more intuitive and could tell when a camera was on/off rather than needing to change the setting from scan when both kids were sleeping to view camera 1/2 when only one of the kids were sleeping and have the camera on.
I’ve had this system for 2 years now. I originally bought the camera and monitor but when my son got older and became a toddler we bought a second camera with a wide angle lens for the playroom. This system has worked great for us with little problems. I did have to replace the charger after a year as it didn’t work. But the battery itself was fine. My only complaint is that it doesn’t reach as far as it says. My sons room is upstairs on the opposite side of our 3600sq ft home from our master bedroom, and sometimes if I put my phone next to the monitor at night it will beep that it is out of range. Might just be the walls, but we also can’t walk past our neighbors house and watch either. We like to go over for a drink after bedtime to the house directly nextdoor to us (and our houses are like 10 feet apart). It works but only in certain parts of their house.
Good system. All around happy with this purchase. We scan between two kids and everything functions as described. My only caution/complaint is the temperature function. The thermometer attached to each camera is way off. It overstates the temperature in our kids’ rooms by 4-5 degrees. Here we were trying to cool their rooms to a comfortable sleeping temperature and then wondering why the rooms and our kids were uncomfortably cold. Once we put Google Nest sensors in the rooms and saw the real temperature in there, we realized these cameras were to blame. I’m not sure if the camera thermometer is just bad tech or if the camera emits enough heat to affect the thermometer, but either way, they are unreliable.
