Product looks ok. It's very thin metal. Holds a brillo pad basically. I'll likely add some weight inside, or put a magnet on the bottom so it doesn't move around on the bench top during use.
Arrived today in a flimsy bubble wrap envelope. Top of the housing was crushed slightly. I massaged it out using the back of a sharpie marker to push out the dent gently and slowly work out the crease. I then fixed the opening that was now oval and returned it to being almost a circle again.
Product is not perfect now but it will be good enough as is. It's for taking solder off a hot Iron after all! lol!
It's a bit disappointing it was damaged due to being sent in an envelope. The metal is super thin so obviously it wouldn't have taken much to deform it. On the flip side. It wasn't crazily packed with a pound of Styrofoam and plastic so I'll accept the dent vs killing the planet!
It works alright, the wire ball spins around a little too freely for my preference. The unit as a whole is quite light weight and moves around very easily when cleaning the iron tip. Im thinking of finding a heavy washer or other chunk of metal and gluing it to the inside of the base
Works much easier than cleaning and wetting a sponge.... however... the holder is VERY light. There are some "feet" on the bottom that provide some traction, but you can easily push it around your work surface. My solution was to purchase 4 large 2 1/2" fender washers and place them in the bottom of the container. The extra weight helps keep the holder in place.
I just stumbled on this a while ago while looking for a soldering station with clamps. My dad introduced me to soldering when I was probably around 10 years old and it has been a hobby off and on ever since. I had always used the traditional wet sponge (or in a pinch, wet paper towel) but this thing is awesome! And no temporary cooling of the tip!
As others have noted, it is a bit lightweight but this can easily be solved by adding something else to the bottom to weigh it down a bit. So awesome. Would have been nice if this were built into the soldering/clamping station I bought but I may figure out a way to make it a part of it.
1. It’s very light weight. When you clean you iron it tends to tip over or move. The rubber feet on the bottom are useless. I used putty to keep in place. 2. It’s fairly cheap feeling, and easy to damage. 3. The hood is great, it’s prevents solder from flying everywhere including onto you hand. 4. It does look nice and the finish has lasted. 5. Easy to find replacement wire sponge. 6. Cleans very well. Overall happy, just wish it was heavier.
It honestly works as good as i could have hoped for but its a little light, ive seen these for years and they always seemed heavier lol. But i decided to get one for a little soldering desk i made so my helping hand and tip tinner and tip holders, iron holder etc. can all be in one place and portable. I ended up screwing the tip cleaner down cause i really want it to stay still so i can really put some force into scraping off any oxidation without the housing moving from the force of pushing in the iron. It has three holes in the base which made screwing it down more convenient than drilling my own holes. Im certainly not disappointed with this product but after using it i realized how easy it would be to make one myself that is far superior. But overall i dont regret the purchase.
I'm just an amateur at soldering and I'm just learning about the importance of keeping tips clean. I'm impressed with the quality of this item and appreciate how it works. Just plunge the hop tip into the wire mesh. Excellent results. My only minor disappointment is with the small size of the housing and contents; based on the photos, I expected something a bit larger than this -- only 2 11/16" diameter at the housing base.
