Don't let reviews of strong coconut smell push you away - newly reformulated as of November 2015
Reviewed in the United States on 15 November 2015
I have been using this Coconut Creme Cowash Cleansing Conditioner near-exclusively for the past four months on my very wavy/medium curl, natural dirty blond-with-salon-highlights hair. I used to be a WEN customer, but my scalp just felt dirty, and the excessive product use need and water requirements for rinsing turned me off, though only secondary to the enormous expense of the product. Vastly disappointed with all other brands, from Nexxus to Ogx and every single drugstore brand you could convince me to buy, I gave this a try. The price is reasonable.
I have happily turned to this as a WEN alternative and am very pleased. I use this (and the lavender scent) on my two little girls age 3 & 5. I feel better using this gentle and natural product that works great as well as supporting a family company here in the US. The product is thin and comes out much easier than WEN (my pumps often died and I had to shake the bulk containers out on my hand measuring by eye leaving waste and an inconvenient mess), but I don't feel I need an excessive amount to get the job done, and I feel clean and moisturized.
Here are my hints to using this and getting the best effect: brush your hair beforehand, and if you don't, gently comb your hair while the product is still in. I don't understand how people are getting seriously tangled. It is thin, so make sure your hair is thoroughly wet, and squeeze the excess water out first. I don't need a lot of product until my whole head feels sufficiently coated. This is not a product you swish in big circles all around your head, you gently massage your scalp and the ends, and I keep the actual hair washed agitated (so to speak) in a downward motion. It tames my typically very frizzy hair effortlessly with no after product - I only using a bit of styling stuff occasionally. For the first time in my daughters' lives, there are NO TANGLES, no tears, no spray in detangler needed. Other than the hugely expensive Moroccan Oil Intense Hydrating mask I buy from my salon, nothing achieves this for them.
Please note it is the BEST SHAVE LOTION in the world, imo. It does make the floor of the shower stall very slick so you must be careful, but my legs have *never* been left so moisturized and gotten such a close shave, with my normal run of the mill razors.
I will say, as the title of my post reads, they seriously changed and removed the scent they added to the product. I used to feel like I was being transported to a tropical isle. I am very sensitive to smells and have to be careful with my products for sensitivity, as well as any "scent-layering" effect that could drive me crazy, between the "unscented deoderants," any hair styling products, and cowash/shampoo-conditioner. However, I happened to like this scent, more than their lavender scent. Today, I had used the very last bit of my last bottle and then opened up the new bottle that just arrived Thank you Amazon Prime. There is little scent. I thought, I must have bought the wrong thing! No, it's the same, the only difference I can see is that instead of "ZERO" at the bottom, it now says "NO" (sodium chloride etc) on the front of the label. The ingredients are positioned differently - text is justified differently - but it appears the ingredients are the same. It worked just fine. I will miss smelling my little girls heads when we snuggle and smiling though at the 'old' scent. This new scent smells masculine, VERY similar to their Renpure Coconut Creme Curling Jelly Styling Gel. I do not love this smell. I just want the product to work the same at the end of the day though, and this is still pretty subtle.
Renpure, it would be have been better to add something to the label so that existing customers would know about this change and not question the formulation! Something like "now with a milder scent" or something more concise would have been nice.
I do occasionally use a Moroccan Oil clarifier to keep any product build up away, but I don't know if it is really necessary. I am used to my curly blond hair becoming dull when it is properly moisturized so I do this preventatively just in case.
In conclusion, I no longer am transported to the tropics with the scent of this product, but it will allow other scents (or no scent at all, score!) take the forefront. My hair is conditioned and clean, and I feel confident I'm making a good choice with this product for the environment, for my family, and in supporting a domestic business.
I was NOT compensated with any free product but I sure wish I was.
