I am trully an inexperienced user when it comes to soldering and due to that had destroyed my tip on the soldering iron. I was struggling to solder because the heat would not transfer and the solder just did not take to the parts being soldered. You can see the bad condition of my tip in the first photo. I know, I know, the professionals are looking in horror.
After watching a few video on Youtube I realised I needed to re-tin the tip if I wanted to have any success with soldering. After much trying, the tip would just not tin. I bought this product after seeing a video on using a tip tinner.
The stuff is like magic and I just dipped the tip in and pulled it out and even that bad tip was tinned and what a differece it made to soldering. I feel like a pro now!
I bought this on spec as I had seen no reviews, but am glad I did. Now it is a permanent fixture on top of my soldering station, next to the brass-shaving tip cleaner. It is handy because you can tin the soldering tip one-handed immediately before using the soldering iron. It puts on just enough to coat the tip, so even with very fine SMD soldering work it does not flood the joint with surplus solder.
This is a brilliant bit of kit for restoring soldering iron tip. Specially useful if you have soldering irons that don’t have proper temperature control. They oxidise the tips very quickly. This restore them back to usable again👌
This neat little tin of tip tinner does exactly what you’d hope, it may be small but I’ve been using it for about 6 weeks daily and I’ve barely made a dent in the contents. For £5 I’d say it’s good value to prolong the life of your solder tips and means you can tin the tip with one hand (assuming you’ve already opened the tin) which makes life a bit easier when soldering. It arrived quickly and in good condition, functions exactly as it should. Not much more to say than that!
I have been soldering for many years in the electronics industry and I still do a lot of soldering on pcb's and with model railways. Tips will oxidise over time and as I use the nickel iron plated variety they will eventually oxidise. I would go through a lot of tips over the year and at £5 each that adds up. I decided to buy this tip cleaner to try and I'm amazed at how good it is. I have several old used bits that where pretty useless and all but one of them was restored 100% using this wonderful product. On one tip it restored about 75% and is usable as such so I'm very happy with my purchase. Would recommend this product 100% but note it's quite a small tin but well worth the money and will pay for it's self keeping your soldering iron tips alive for longer.
I have a fairly standard cheap temperature controlled soldering iron. I use a copper scouring mesh cleaner ( looks like a kitchen scouring pad made from copper shavings ). After 4 or 5 jabs into the mesh at the beginning of the day I push the tip into this cleaning powder. Very effective, leaves the tip perfectly clean and shiny all along its length.
Tad pricey so I use sparingly, but does help keep the tip clean. Quick clean at the start and end of the soldering session is all that's needed in my experience. A touch in the middle if you leave the iron hot for a while (fun with SMDs! ). Works best when paired with the brass wool tip cleaners
