The intricacies of family relationships are so complex and yet Abbey slowly understands what she has been searching for over the years. It's not fame nor necessarily wealth but a sense of belonging. A fast paced, compelling story with twists and turns but also a few lessons in guilt, compassion and of course, love. Another wonderful book by Sheila O'Flanagan.

This is nice and cleverly constructed story in the brilliant tradition of Irish female authors.

Even though heroine Abbey Andersen lives in San Francisco, her ancestors are Irish and the book tells the story about Abbey and her mother Ellen's unexpected meeting with their Irish family.

In short. Ellen was adopted by an American couple as a baby. In his old age her birth father, widower Fred Fitzpatrick, wants to do right by the baby daughter he abandoned fifty years ago and hires an investigator to trace her in America. As Ellen cannot be easily reached, the investigator meets her daughter Abbey who accepts Fred's invitation to visit him in Ireland. Shortly after they are introduced, Fred dies from a heart attack and Abbey's world is suddenly turned upside down.

In his marriage Fred has three children who all expect to inherit his substantial estate. They are all in financial trouble and need the money badly. So imagine the chock and anger when it appears that Fred has included Ellen and Abbey in his will. And not only with a mere pittance.....

There is a lot to learn about the human character in this book. Most of it maybe not entirely new, but interesting variations of well known thruths. And as always when a will appears, both expected and unexpected things happen.

The many and different characters are well described. Abbey is by far the most likeable and interesting, but also her "half-aunts" Suzanne, Zoey and Lisette are women who are strong and capable. Especially Zoey made me smile, especially in what should have been entirely awkward situations.

It all ends well and I think, to most readers' satisfaction. And perhaps there is a little something for us all to learn both about life, happiness and especially money!

Praise for Sheila O'Flanagan, an excellent story teller.

Enjoyed this book for the fisrt couple of chapters. Too quickly it.became a rather boring political debate over the beneficiaries of the will that lasted the entire duration of the story. The characters were interesting enough but the arguements over the will became a depressing read. kept hoping there would be some romance in it and there wasnt. i got bored of the characters in the end and even more bored of the overall plot of the story. felt a long haul with no satisfying result and ultimately rather.depressing read.

A great story and characters that came to life, which is what I have come to expect from this author, as I have read all her other books. I have not quite finished this one yet but it has kept me reading until the early hours, want to find out the ending, but will hate to come to the end of the story. All I can say is I hope she writes another book soon, but until then there are several other excellent Irish authors for me to read, they are always such good story tellers.
