I have another product from this brand- body scrub , which I love and that was the reason I bought the shampoo. But this one disappointed me ! Far too expensive for its performance. Doesn’t actually do much more than a similar but much cheaper shampoo! Won’t buy it again!
I have to say I'm pretty impressed. I've not had any luck trying Shea Moisture products in the last two years. I've tried various, especially from the famed Coconut and Hibiscus line and hated every single one of them due to their sickly stench and the amount I had to use to look just barely presentable. My hair was made frizzy so I gave them away to my mum who also hated them and threw them away. I was very put off trying Shea Moisture again but seeing so many new product lines and their introduction to stores near me, which otherwise neglect curly hair products, made me want to try once more.
This was a pleasant surprise. It smells perfumed and slightly earthy. When wet it smells like macadamia nuts, which I like, so it made me rather pleased. The first time I used it, I had to prepare myself to throw it away because it instantly made my strands stick together as it lathered up so fiercely. But after washing it out fully, my hair felt fine. Not super moisturised like the product claims, honestly, but the way I've always expected from a gentle shampoo. My hair doesn't feel stripped, but just before that stage at super clean. My scalp isn't irritated, I'm guessing that's due to the lack of hard sulfates as I can no longer use regular shampoos that make my scalp burn and itch.
I'm still questioning whether I should get it again because As I Am's Coconut Cowash is super moisturising and cleansing at the same time. And I really have a lot of hair and want to keep my wash routine to as minimal steps as possible and the cowash lets me get away with not needing to shampoo and then condition. We'll see, but so far the cowash is winning out as it is also the cheaper of the two for a bigger volume of product. So, if the shampoo were cheaper, I might just designate it my new default cleanser. That being said, I love the packaging and my success with this product has encouraged me to not completely give up hope buying Shea Moisture products in the future.
Now if only a wider variety was available' on Amazon...
Edit: After much deliberation, I've decided to go back to my cowash. It's cheaper and all of the scabs and itchiness that I used to deal with daily from my sulfate conditioners have returned with this shampoo. It is NOT SULFATE FREE. I do feel lied to, I look on the ingredients, while it has only softer sulfates in it, they're still sulfates. I decided to continue using it because I wanted to give the product a chance but now my scalp is suffering and my hair has become extremely dry over time (this being the only new product to be incorporated into my regular routine) to the point where I have had to cut my hair. I found that many companies are now labelling their products as sulfate free and are not, so be careful.
I've found that there are two different formulations of this shampoo. One has fragrance (essential oil blend) and the other has fragrance (parfum) which is also higher up on the list (i.e. more of it). I keep having to return the one with parfum--one from Target and this one from Amazon.
Since I have dry hair, I was excited to see what this product could do for me. And it does give really nice curly, smooth pieces of hair.
Unfortunately, it also leaves a really serious residue in my hair. This is shampoo; it's supposed to wash out. Instead it sticks to the underlayers of my hair and leaves my scalp looking greasy and unwashed. It's also not really "moisturized," more just... dry with residue. It's brittle and more difficult to brush.
I tried more intense rinsing, less shampoo, different application... nothing really made this one work for me. Maybe if you've got 4A-4C hair like they recommend, but I've noticed 4A-4C people on this product mentioning the same problems.
Ordered this with other hair items & it came with just the bottle in the box , not placed ina bag or saran wrapped. The white foil type top on it was opened and it spilled out into the shipping box . Will not return bc i need it and not much was spilled out but please be careful when this is shipped to but it in a bag to protect it & prevent missing product.
