If you have never played fiddle, you likely won't learn to do so from reading this book. I mean , TAB? For violin? If you can play already, you will find the written versions of the tunes (the book is mostly tunes) very basic indeed. He does mention shuffle bowing, cross-tuning and drones, but without going into any real detail or explanation about using them, or giving written examples. He also mentions improvisation, again without giving any really useful information about how to do it. The whole book just sort of skims over the surface. If you are a 'complete ignoramus', you probably won't become very enlightened by using this book. If not, you will find the book too basic. There are far better resources out there.
Just about the only thing keeping me learning the violin (fiddle) is this book. As a guitar player there's a lot of work between playing the guitar well and just staying in tune and playing clear notes on the violin. This book stops you getting too frustrated and giving up - well it's working for me anyway. When I get to the end I'll tell you what I did next - but I'm self teaching - an exercise I can thoroughly recommend to any music teacher if you want to remind yourself why getting a teacher is better than trying to teach yourself. A violin teacher for me isn't far down the road...It's just that getting the basics is so hard if someone isn't there beside you and showing you in 'real-time'. But this book is about as good as you can get for self teaching. (But that's from the perspective of a guitar teacher, newly back from a guitar bluegrass course in Tennessee where I heard some brilliant bluegrass playing on the fiddle - so my opinion might be a bit bias.)
This book is fantastic. So glad I picked this one.The songs are all easy to pick up,and the book teaches you to add your own personal flourishes/shuffles etc.I'm really enjoying playing the classics I know and learning some new ones.the book is also good fun as well as being informative.I would recommend this for absolute beginners and those who can read a little sheet music. The CD included is also very good and helpful.it plays the tunes with fiddle and guitar which you can swap around with the balance.I found this helped give me a real feel for how the tune should sound...If you want to know about old time fiddleing then this is definitely the book for you.
I bought this book shortly after buying a fiddle, I had absolutely no previous experience of playing any instrument. It has been a really valuable resource, starting from the very basics but without being patronising it allows you to begin playing simplified tunes quickly with advice on how to build on them later. It was a good grounding before starting lessons. Featuring both Tab and written music it is suitable for those who read music and those who don't. The audio CD plays most of the tunes at two speeds and also helps to teach scales. It is, in summary, an excellent teaching aid for the absolute beginner and worthy of a 5 star rating.
I always wanted to play the fiddle but was lead to believe you had to start as a toddler to be able to pick it up! For my 31st birthday I got a fiddle and I've been banging out tunes since day 1 thanks to this book! Brilliant. Couldn't recommend it enough!
I was hoping to take fiddle classes but sadly the only thing I could take in my current city is Violin so I just went to learn how to use the instrument. I ordered this book, and it is even easier to read than what the instructor was showing me. I can't even read music notes and I can do this ! Amazing, you'll love it ! It's also nice that it comes with the CD :)
A nice balance between lore and fiddle tunes. I like how the tunes are grouped by key, from easiest to more challenging. I have some violin experience so I won't be using his "system" but I found his notes on theory to be informative.
