On paper this controller had everything I needed, 16 pads in a useful layout & multiple control knobs. The downloadable editor made it easy to change the banks of pad values to match my DAW & also setup scales for playing more like a keyboard. Unfortunately mine had terrible pad sensitivity from day one which got steadily worse meaning you had to hit them so hard to trigger or avoid double triggers, soft notes were impossible. Holding pads would also re-trigger creating unwanted notes. Sadly had to return it.
Connected straight away into Cubase 8 Artist, the pads I found have a really good response and velocity sensitivity. I found it very user friendly, fun and a pleasure to use. The software is easy to download and use, you have to open a free account with Akai to do so. ON the Akai website you can also download a free editor which allows you to change and assign the pads so very easily. It's built well, and is way way better than any pads I have used or touched that are built into the end of a midi keyboard. This is dedicated and designed for one purpose and it does the job very well. As a Pro recording artists and studio I have little patience for any software or hardware that does not work or is unfriendly to operate. This is instant, fast, easy, reliable so that you can dive in and get on with things.
Nice bit of kit but wish they gave you a case for it (or sold one). I have had this a week and no problems. The software is top notch no need for any other daw . This is a great starting point for someone needing a midi pad and great software . Few improvements could be made ( like how to link and map quickly in ableton live lite) with a quick reference book/ sheet .brilliant and would love to use or test other kits just to see how they compare 10 out of 10 from me
So... this is a update on my purchase. Now I have had time to play around with this a bit more I can now fully say with out any doubts this is a brilliant piece of equipment. I have been using this to mix , run samples and use it as a drum kit too in addition to this I bought the akai 25 key midi keyboard too and found that the software can be used on the akai 26 and mpd218 . I would love to try out more of there line as I was amazed at the quality and software you get with each item you buy. Anyone wishing to get a jumpstart to there music then look no further than here. Again I would love to test and own other midi devices that akai produce
Doubling hitting is a problem very well known with these devices, in fact there is post on forums, reddit and all over the internet about it.
every single pad on my MPD226 double hits, when i record a sequence I need to quantize and clean up the MIDI every single time because of the double hits. It's extremely annoying and as a result I don't use the device, it's in my cupboard collecting dust.
1 Star rating because this is a common fault with many of these device, AKAI need to take responsibility and either stop selling this product or put the price up a bit and use better components.... even have a better Quality Control process.
It’s difficult to leave a full product review because since I purchased this MPD232 - I’ve been unable to obtain a licence for the MPC Essentials software that is bundled with it, without which the software plays white noise to ensure that you don’t get much from it unlicensed.
It appears to work OK in my DAW (Logic Pro) but because of the issues trying to licence the software, most of my time since it arrived has been spent trying to get it working.
I've been trying to obtain a serial number from their web-site for three days.
On day’s one and two - the process kept timing out with an ‘Invalid response’ error.
On day two my attempts to get the licence were also hampered by problems even getting to the 'My Registered Products Link' on the Website because of server errors!
I used the 'Contact Support' page and reported the issue of course. No one bothered to respond on the first day and on day two I was told that they were undergoing maintenance on the Website and if the information didn’t resolve my enquiry to let them know. I asked if they could email me the licence key. They didn’t respond.
Today, day three I’m getting ‘An error has occurred: support team has been informed please try again tomorrow’
This evening I also tried the Facebook page thinking that their attention may be more focused on a social media site. I typed my dilemma in to the chat box and again requested that they please email a licence key to the product. I was told that ‘Someone will reply shortly’. After waiting an hour for a response, I decided write this review.
Before this purchase, I did consider some of the other reviews here that were critical of the Akai customer service - or lack of it, but I took the risk. So far it has been to my cost.
I will keep on at them until I get what I’m entitled and I’ll let you know how this resolves for your own awareness.
Naively, I did expect much better customer service from a company with the reputation of Akai.
I did eventually receive a personal message on Facebook telling me that would look in to my issue, and am very pleased to report that in day 4 the web process worked. Everything is now fully functional and I can start to investigate the product fully.
I’ve upped the star rating by one and when the product review is complete, amend this review again.
The customer service and support has however has been very poor, especially when you consider that this software licensing issue has been reported in these reviews since 2017!
Just a warning to those of us who are keen musicians but not technologically savy. THIS PRODUCT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO GET UP AND RUNNING due to the complex and convoluted downloads one has to complete to do so. THIS SHOULD CLEARLY BE ADVISED at point of purchase. I hope this note will help others simimilar to me and avoid them having to experience the frustration I am going through. Even with the help of two professional computer savy technicians I was unable to get this product to work within my reecording studio setup. I am sure the actual item works well...but no good if one cannot get the required operating system to make it operate. WHY DON'T THEY JUST INCLUDE a simple CD with the software required AND offer the purcahser clear and simple instructions on how to get it up and running?
It's a shame so many have had bad experiences with this, judging from the reviews.
Right out of the box, it synced up to my preferred DAW (Mixcraft 8) with no manual mapping required. I inserted an instrument track, picked a drum kit and I was recording a beat in seconds, (and that was before I'd even installed any of the Akai software). From there I can manually map clips to the pads, and different parameters to the dials etc.
The pads are reasonably responsive. Light touches don't register so well, so they do need a fairly firm contact, but once you make the right contact, they are very responsive to fills and rolls. It just takes a bit of getting used to.
I have an Akai keyboard controller, and it feels very flimsy, like a toy. I was sort of expecting very light build quality from this too considering the price, but it's solid. The dials feel very good, and all of the pads are very robust.
The software bundle that comes with this is crazy too. I already have Ableton but for those who don't, the Ableton Live Lite is a great package. The MPC Essentials and Big Bang Drums are great pieces of kit, and Reason Lite is also a great DAW. So all in you get two high quality DAWs, and a whole host of sounds to use (both within Ableton Lite, Reason Lite and the Big Bang Drums system), plus the unit itself, all for £70. You won't get better value than that.
If you're looking for a starter kit to get working with pads, this is literally everything you need (besides a computer, obviously) at a great price. And if you get one, buy brand new, so you can register the device and be eligible for the software bundle. It's a decent device on its own, but to get all that software included in the price, it's a steal! If it's 2nd hand, someone else will have registered the serial number and you won't be able to get all the kit that comes with it.
