To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.
I am only reviewing 2 starts for Tangrams. We love numbers and words (4 stars) but Tangram worked well for us for a short time and now it won't pick up some of the shapes we put in front of the iPad. No matter what we do. No clue why - wish I could do something to fix it.
So the games seem engaging enough for our 8 year old so far, if some are a little easy. Here's the really exasperating thing. We spend a pretty big chunk of money for a kit that's supposed to include everything they need to play these games. Right? Nope! He can't play some of the games because he doesn't have the 'creative board,' which it seems that you can only get if you drop another hefty chunk of dough for the creative kit, even though the reviews say that the 'creative board' is basically just a regular white board. The system won't 'recognize' the regular old white board that he's trying to play with. When you look at an image of the 'creative board' you see that it has 'Osmo' printed on it, and the system won't recognize the board without the word there. This did give us an opportunity to use our imagination to come up with a solution - thanks Osmo! But it's a dirty trick to try to get you to sink more money into your set, just to play the games that you have already purchased. (No thanks, Osmo.)
I bought this for my almost 5 year old even though Christmas was over and his birthday isn't for another couple months. I'd heard about it from friends and it seemed like an amazing product to really help him learn. I paid for expedited shipping because I simply couldn't wait for him to start playing with it! The packaging is fantastic and the instructions are very clear- both written and video. $100 is a bit steep but if it worked as advertised it would be well worth it.
Unfortunately, the bugs in the software on a couple of the apps made it difficult to use. I tried the tangram one myself to see how to do it before turning it over to my son. Thank goodness I did because the app was so full of bugs it simply did not recognize when I had arranged the shapes the way it had instructed. I kept moving them fractions of an inch to try and correct but the app just wasn't picking up on it. This was at the "easy" level, to boot! I brushed it off and figured if that app is the one casualty, I'm ok keeping the rest of the system so long as it worked.
We ran into similar bugs with both the words app and the monster app where the app either wouldn't recognize what was visible to the camera or would count something twice. Very frustrating- particularly for the kids in their target age group.
I think this item and the technology have the potential to be an excellent learning tool down the road but it seems there are still quite a few kinks to work out.
I'm so sad to be returning this the same day I received it but I just can't justify the expense if most of the intended functionality is just not there.
For reference: We have an iPad Mini- a new one (purchased this year) and everything was set up for the iPad model that we were working with.
Bought this for my 9 year old. Some games work great but others glitch & cause major frustration! Tech support although nice didn't solve the problems. Wish I wouldn't have bought this! Perhaps with time, the company can fix this.
Tried two game so far. One is Tangram. It's constantly asking to adjust position like move left and down. Very annoying. The second one - Numbers, I even can't start, constantly crashing. Very disappointed.
