We used de-ionised water from a car parts shop as we live in a very hard water area.
Followed instructions, didn't manage to dissolve all of the powder into the boiling water as was suggested might happen. Daughter enjoyed watching it grow over the next 10 days.
Was easy to drain off remaining water and remove from the pint glass. Was a little disappointed the crystals weren't green as advertised - although the seed rock (piece of plaster with textured surface) does glow in the dark.
Daughter loves it regardless, she really does treasure it and is very proud of it.
I think it looks pretty cool, there isn't much to do in the sense of 'preparation' - Just stir in powder to boiling water which I was a bit cautious of my 6 year old doing.
Great idea, but as per other reviews, not really much involvement for kids other than seeing how much the crystal has grown each day - which in our case wasn't a lot! We followed the instructions to the letter, but as others have experienced, the powder dissolved nicely but then formed crystals around the bottom of the glass in a ring - effectively welding the seed rock in place. When we tried to remove it (incredibly carefully I should add), the crystals broke away from the seed rock, leaving us with a load of little crystal shards and a disappointed 5 year old. We've ended up with a very expensive lump of fluorite! I love the idea of these things, but they need better instructions I think. If I did it again, I would probably not use a pint glass (a tumbler would work fine) and I would maybe try and regularly remove crystals that form around the seed rock base - hopefully this review might help others avoid the same issues we've had.
I brought this for my 6 year nephew and wasn't too pleased with this purchase. We followed the instructions to make the solution and left the crystal settle. On first day it formed like a crystal, growing on all the sides of the seed. But, then gradually all the structure started forming at the base of the seed. We finally took it out after 10 days, and it was so fragile that it broke. My nephew was hoping to get something he can hold in his hand. I am not sure why this happened, it could be that temperature suddenly became very warm at the time we were doing this experiment.
I am disappointed in the outcome of the crystal as on amazon and the packaging it came in it is shown as a vivid green colour. This is not the case with the crystal that has grown in the last week, as there is no colour to the crystal itself and the luminescent glow is minimal at best. We followed the instructions to the letter, but feel let down. I'm disappointed to say that I won't be purchasing this item again in the future.
Very disappointed my child waiting 14 days for this not very interested to watch and a small crystal to show for at the end and not green as shown in the box completely white unless you shine a ultraviolet light (black light) on it and it glows for a couple of seconds. The Red And Purple are not any better either
I was hoping to make this kit but on reading the instructions it was to fine that I did not have anywhere constantly light and warm enough. So I have had to put it away till the summer. Such a shame as my grandson was looking forward to the results
I bought this for my sons 7th birthday. We followed the instructions, only to be disappointed! The crystals accrued but only along the side of the glass jam jar as recommended and there was no green colour to it what so ever and certainly never glowed in the dark. I have bought many things from National Geographic and majority have been as they've described but not this one.
