The young and exceptionally talented composer and pianist, Norwegian Ola GJeilo who has written the music for the disc comprising voices, piano, and strings in various combinations, describes his experience with the two choirs he cooperated with, for the disc as follows: 'Working with two of the absolute premier choirs in the world, Tenebrae and Voces8, was an incredible, humbling experience - their musicianship touched me to the core. I would soak up every elegant phrase ending, every perfectly blended chord, every exquisite inflection I'd never heard before...' I advise the reader to take the composer's comments at their face value.
We listen here to the expressive medium of the human voice at its best and finest in sacred chorals. The exquisite, ethereal voices elevate our spirit in an altogether higher level of spirituality while we feel a tangible purification of our soul. The instrumental music acts as a beautiful complement to the voices.
Earlier this year, I was lucky enough to sing Ola Gjeilo's "Luminous Night of the Soul" and "Sunrise Mass" with my choir, and about the same time I noticed that he was getting a lot of airplay on Classic FM. He has to be one of the most talented composers working today, especially considering his young age. He uses instruments and voices in new ways to achieve his own distinct sound - yet the music is somehow familiar and very soothing. This album contains a lovely mix of his orchestral and choral works. I have marked it down only because it woes not contain the magical "Luminous Night of the Soul" (which does not appear to be available on any CD).
Ola Gjeilo is a Norvegian composer and piano player. In the period 2001 - 2004 he studied classical composition first in Julliard School and than in the Royal College of Music (London). He currently lives and works in US. This is his last (2016) work and it is written for choir, piano, and string orchestra. For me personally, in a broad sense, this is a contemporary work of a very talented young composer in the tradition of Arvo Pärt compositions for choir and strings. But by no means it is a copy - Ola Gjeilo has its own style with very elegant phrases, very beautiful compositions and a very nice amalgam between the strings and the voices. Enjoy it.
Not the sort of thing I normally buy, it came up on the product recommendations, I gave it a quick listen and really liked what I heard. The whole disc is a great thing to have on while you work and I have added this artist to my list of people to look out for
this is some of the most lovely music I have ever heard. most of the tracks are sacred music, they are truly moving and beautifull. if your not a fan of sacred music, don't be put off. I heard a track on classic fm and didn't know what it was, but ordered the cd anyway. I wasn't disappointed. this music is soothing and relaxing and quite different from anything ive heard before. give it a try.
