Bought to cover a short absence. Wasn't quite convinced that it would work as planned but was pleasantly surprised. I used room temperature sachets of food for the first meal, then frozen sachets of food in conjunction with the supplied freezer bricks for another two meals. It worked and worked well. I had a friend check in on the second day and they watched as the unit performed as expected and at the specified time. Great!
This ‘Millennium Falcon’ style feeder has 5 food tray compartments but as one is always open, the maximum useable compartments are effectively 4. This gives a maximum of four controlled feeds.
I found it a bit complicated to get my head around the feeding options. This is why it only gets 4 stars. The instructions are not explicit. Don’t let that put you off, it’s given us numerous last minute away days without getting in a cat sitter!
Here is what I understand. You can have a maximum of four meals served automatically at set times, with the following provisos:-
You can set 1 meal per day, at the same time each day for a maximum of four days. OR You can set 2 meals per day over a maximum of two days each pair at the same time. OR You can set 4 meals to be served at different set times over one 24 hr period.
I have two c500 feeders working ‘in parallel’ and use them as 4 day feeders, one delivering a morning feed At 7am each day, the other delivering an evening feed at 7pm each day.
It is tricky keeping the cat food fresh ( we use fresh fish offcuts) but by using the provided freezer blocks and filling trays with frozen and part defrosted fish pieces, have managed four days feeding on a couple of occasions. I have to say 4 days using frozen fresh fish is really pushing the limits, especially if the weather turns very warm. Note , this in combination with a large dry food hopper and large water fountain. However the c500s are mostly used when we are away for one or two days, and at this they are excellent .
Tip- to keep the food cooler for longer, using a couple of layers of non slip mats to help raise the feeder off the floor, adding to the insulation. It’s is very light, even loaded with food and the non slip mats stop it moving when the greedy furry thing really gets stuck in. It does have permanent screw down anchor points if needed but we find non slip mats easy to use and clean.
Our Bengal cat does not attempt to break in to the feeder, which we simply leave on non slip mats on the kitchen floor and I think it would take a powerful animal to do so. It has screw down anchor points if needed, should your cat insists on trying to relocate it and a pretty much foolproof clipped down top to prevent Intrusion.
As a reliable cat feeder, I recommend the c500. However, I suspect when you come to read the instructions, and try to work out the electronic timer options, you will realise why I only gave 4 stars to what is otherwise a good product.
Gutes Gerät, welches man für einen Tag einstellen kann. Leider bringt der Automat nichts für 2Tage, da schon am ersten Tag die Näpfe leer gefressen sind. Ich suche einen Automaten wo man auch den Tag einstellen kann.
Purchased this feeder because our cat feeder was going away to her parents before we returned from a family visit at Christmas. Tested it before we went away and it is simple to set up can feed up to 4 times in 1 day or 1 time for 4 days. Our cat has wet food once a day and it has proven itself to be excellent at doing what it's supposed to, the cat had no problem adapting to it and was able to clear all the food except for that pushed right into the corners (the cat pushed it into the corners so it's disown fault. Only minute scraps anyway). Will no doubt get good use from it in future seems sturdy and reliable, the food stays fresh with the freezer blocks in the feeder. The cat was smiling when we got home so he was happy with it.
I bought this for my rabbits for when I go on holiday so my pet sitter only has to visit once a day. I'm just doing a trial with them now, and it's taking a few days for them to realise dinner is there! It also took me a few days to figure out how it works and I am not sure I understand all the settings either, but as I only need it to open once at the same time every day I guess that's ok. It also took me a few days to notice where the dish numbers are. Maybe newer designs can have them in the dish? All in all I think this will be just what I need!
UPDATE: This has been a lifesaver for me! If I know I am going to be home late after work, I just set the feeder for their normal feeding time and relax knowing they are getting fed. It is perfect and I couldn't recommend more.
I bought this for a peace of mind since I don't want to leave my cat at a pet hotel. Works great so far, the design is simple and practical, the ice packs are a great addition if you'd like to leave some pate or canned food. I liked the option to nail the feeder down to a wooden surface to prevent your pet tampering with it, but they can still manage to open the top lid because the closing is not too secure - the grey buttons on the side are easily opened and your pet might figure it out pretty quick. We needed to tape said buttons when we left for a weekend to make sure the cat won't be able to make a mess of it. The timer is a bit of a mess, but once you get it right, you don't need to reset even when changing the batteries cause it stays on for like a min or 2 without batteries to give you time to change without losing your settings. The separate bowls are a bit small and my cat had a hard time adjusting at first, so he had to push his food outside the bowl to eat. Overall, I'm happy with this feeder, the pros outweigh the cons.
This is a great help for me as my cat has ‘issues’ with food. Mainly that it can’t come fast enough or often enough. He spends his time following me around and meowing at me. It’s quite easy to set up. Since I got this he seems quite happy to sit crouched next to it waiting for it to open. He’s learnt roughly when its about to open, he’s always about 20 minutes early though but I’m sure he’ll adjust his clock eventually. The only niggle with this for me is that I can only use 4 out of the 5 compartments because one of them is always going to be lined up at the open window. This means that I would have to fill it up as I give him his first meal so that he eats what’s in the open one then waits for the other four compartments that are timed. This doesn’t really fit in with my routine as I like to fill it last thing of an evening so it’s ready for the next day(dry food) I have worked around this though by giving him his last meal, 5th one, last thing at night in another bowl as I’m filling up the feeder. Maybe a sliding cover would have helped.
