Traveled over 1,000 miles and never even knew this thing was attached. I did add a stabilizer kit for 15$. Was easy to take off once we reached our destination and then put back on to head home. Love it. Held 5 large suitcases easily along with a few other bags and a tool kit. We laid a black tarp down inside first and then put in all of our luggage, folded the tarp over and tucked in the sides and covered with a small cargo net (got on amazon, stretch distance between ropes was 3inches) that we hooked to the it with carabiner hooks. I mean- we had no trouble what so ever. It was an awesome trip, with lots of comfort and leg room for everyone. My vehicle is a 2016 GMC Yukon. Once installed you cannot open the entire back door, but can open the window for access easily. I LOVE this thing. We incurred rain during our drive and still no problems. I am not seeing rust as some other reviews read. Thinking that may be because of where or how they have stored it, but just guessing. I currently have it in an outside storage room and it still looks great. Although my son did most of the work, I could easily install this myself. It is a little heavy, but once you pick it up and insert it in the hitch, the hard work is done. I also bought a locking pin, instead of a regular one, there is NO pin included and I added some reflectors, although you don't necessarily need them. Overall this thing is Totally worth every dollar paid. These are the items that I added - all bought on Amazon. It started rusting almost right away. I would not advise this purchase. It is supposed to be used outside in the rain so why didnt they make it rust resistant? Anyway I'm sure not long and i will have to buy another one but it won't be by Ericsson. I have included some pictures for you to make your own decision.
Giving it 5 stars for now. Considering what I paid for it, it was what I expected. Took about 10 minutes to put it together. What you need to keep in mind with this is depending on your vehicle your exhaust might be blowing back on this, so you will need to deal with that by either fabricating a heat shield, or getting a hitch riser. I actually went to home depot and purchased 2 pieces of sheet metal and then said to hell with it and took them back and got the riser. It was cheaper and fixed the other thing that was bothering me, distance to the ground. I didn't want to worry about pulling out of a parking lot and having this drag/potentially break if the angle was too much. So will give an update after my trip on how it faired. Also if you purchase this, make sure you get a hitch stabilizer/tightener. Depending on your car any minor clink is going to travel up your frame and sound like bad stuff is happening back there. Plus the stabilizer will extend the life of everything. Things banging around never lead to something positive in life. Build quality on this is about what I expected, it is light weight, if it fairs well I will update the paint job to ensure I get more life out of it. Update: I have used this 2 times for trips to Florida and it has performed great. I keep it in the garage when not in use and still looks brand new.
This is a great cargo carrier! I love the sides, it's nice to just throw everything in and not worry about it sliding off going down the road. I got one of those bungee nets to clasp over the top and it's solid. It does ride a little low on my car, so I have scraped the pathement going over a dip in the road. I gave it 4 stars because I left it on the back of my car for a week while I was on vacation and it rained, and the metal started to rust. Kind of disappointing, but i take it off as soon as I get home from a trip and put it in the garage, so hopefully it will last a while. Great for all that extra baby stuff we have to take everywhere now! I recommend it.
One of the panels was missing the eyelet for the pin. It was loose in the box. I contacted Erickson and received no response. I would have gladly given the product 3-4 stars but will simply not recommend this product due to the non-response.
The package arrived quickly as promised. The item was an easy assembly for me. loved that the bolts had the nuts attached. I was on pace to put this cargo carrier together in 15 minutes. The only thing that went wrong is that one piece (the plate) had holes too narrow for the carriage screws provided. This is definitely a mfg problem. I contacted the company several times, twice by their internal email system and twice by phone. I received no response to either. They seem to be out of their element when it comes to providing products that don't have straps, buckles and hooks. Save your time and purchase it from a company that cares for its customers.
So my initial review was incorrect. We have successfully put this thing together and it works well. The center of the long sides of the basket when closed separate and are loose when in the closed position. A couple of zip ties will fix this. It seems sturdy enough, and on our Honda pilot the license plate clears the top of the basket, just barely. Very easy to put together. I recommend 2 people if possible because it is a little cumbersome and awkward due to the size. It folds down to be more compact for storage. It is a little heavy for me to handle by myself and is much easier to install on the hitch with 2 people. It does not come with a hitch pin. I bought a locking one. There is some wiggle from side to side when empty. I'll have to see when loaded if it still wiggles in the hitch.
I purchased this item to carry some boxes from California to Texas.
Pros: This is a solid rack and it was easy to assemble. All pieces were present and the box came with no damage. The basket is roomy and gives plenty of spots for bungee cords or rope to keep items secure.
Cons: I have a 2015 Kia Soul, which sits pretty high off of the ground. My hitch is a 1 3/4 inch, so I purchased 1 3/4 to 2 in. coupler. This added about three inches to from the car to the basket, which made a huge difference in leverage. With just 80 lbs of stuff on the basket, it went from about 8 inches above the ground to 3 inches, so it bottomed out on most turns and on all driveways. I was unable to use it for the intended purpose.
It took my husband quite a while to put this together, he begged me not to return it. Which I would do in a moment. This carrier is advertised as a "folding" cargo carrier. The implication is that when it is empty, you could fold it up. Much to our surprise, their idea of folding refers to the sides of the carrier. It does not fold up. If you need one that folds, THIS IS NOT THE ONE FOR YOU. Otherwise, it will work great, it seems a little shaky. AND you have to order a $20 hitch pin because it's not included. Then, a day after it was delivered it went on sale for about 16.00 less.
