The form factor of this plate makes it feel like I’m eating out of a frisbee! That’s because the shape is like a wide shallow bowl and that’s why I chose this model. I wanted it as a lid to my frying pan as well as to eat off and it works well. I wasn’t expecting it to be so flexible but I believe that’s usual for titanium plates.
I am very disappointed. We washed iy with soap before use. Upon drying it we found that some black particles came out of the surface if you rub the surface with fingers. See pictures. Wash agsin, still more particles came out. Upon 4 n 5 eash, we used the green green scotch pad and clean the surface with forced. STILL a little bit of particles came out when rubbibg with thumbs. We soaked it with vinegar, then use steel wool to scrub the surface with force. Finally, no more particles came out, when rubbing with fingers. Toaks website said no coating. But obviiusly there is some kind of coating. I want to kbow what kind, is it toxic, I want the Msds sheet for the coating and I plan to send the particles to chemival lab and FDA for further investigation.
This plate doubles as a frying pan. McQ Bushcraft on YouTube has the perfect video on how he makes a wooden handle for this plate. No direct flames and only use coals to cook on, and this plate will be your best friend in the woods. Extremely light, almost to a fault because it feels flimsy like anything take care of it and it will last
I did a two night trip with a 10 mile hike between sites. I wanted to have as light of pack as possible while still being able to have some fun meals I could cook over a campfire. I made eggs, quesadillas, and pancakes directly in this plate over a campfire. It worked great! One thing to note with this is that the plate gets hot quick and will get hot spots so it won't cook evenly. Just paying attention to this and rotating the plate over the coals took care of that issue. This is a great purchase! Lightweight, perfect for one person, and durable.
They are truly ultra light, they feel like they weigh nothing. They are a fair size and feel flimsy but they don't appear to really bend and keep their shape. I cooked an egg as a test on them over an alcohol flame and it performed well. The plate took the heat and then cooled down so quickly I was able to handle the plate while eating the egg that remained hot. I will likely buy more.
Well, this is light weight and I do think it is a great plate. But a plate is all it is. I bought this based upon the reviews that it can be used as a skillet. I’m not sure how y’all managed that, but I ruined the pancake I attempted. Plate was too hot on concentrated backpacking stove. Burned the pancake bottom while the top remained runny, burned through my dry bag when I attempted to set it aside. I hummed Taps gently while I buried my trail breakfast failure. I was so looking forward to blueberry and syrup 10 miles into the wilderness.
If you’re in the market for a titanium plate for camping and hiking, this one is excellent. I have purchased several titanium pieces from Toaks and I’m always pleased. This plate is no exception. What I especially like about this plate is that it’s deep, so you can use it as a shallow bowl as well. It’s lightweight, but quite rigid, so unless you step on it or fall on it, it should last you a long time. The carry bag is a nice addition as well, and it’s loose enough to fit my wood kuksa cup and a spork in the pouch with the plate. All-in-all, it’s a great item and a great value.
