To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

I bought 3 Lionel sets this Christmas season. All three had issues. The most expensive set was a complete failure and returned for a refund. The other set not part of this review was a hobby shop exclusive set that was released two years ago. The smoke unit did not operate new out of the box.
Now for the Pennsylvania Flyer. Good news is the Locomotive has been running strong almost daily for 2 weeks. The smoke unit isn’t very impressive but the kids still say, “look. Smoke”.
Fastrack works well. It helps to use binder clips if your not going to mount it to a platform.
The Lionchief remote is awesome. My 3 year old is completely capable of operating this train from start to finish with no help. Unless...
The couplers fail to hold the cars together. Trying to run the train with the cars in the set cause the tender to uncouple almost immediately. This has been an issue with both of the 2019 sets. The couplers have a plastic locking mechanism and you can no longer take it out and put a better bend in it.
I have resorted to wrapping tape around this mechanism on all of the cars. It keeps the cars coupled but makes some advanced play impossible.
The kids were very upset and almost gave up on trains.
I am returning the train today. 100% plastic. Yuck. I really hoped, for the price, it would be metal like the vintage sets. I guess that was my issue. Should have read more before buying. I guess if you have kids that will throw things, or if you like Leggos or Hungry Hippos, you might like this plastic toddler toy.
I purchased this to put around the tree, upon using it the first time i noticed it squealing around the turns, found the one linkage was bowed and rubbing against the train, removed linkage nd straightened it myself, connected to the phone easily. This is a great little train. If it was not for the linkage being bent i would have givennit 5 stars.
I really really wanted to love this set. When I got it, my boy LOVED it. It looks and sounds amazing and is a great Wonder for a 3 year old. It was easy enough to install and setup and a 3 year old is able to manipulate the remote just fine.
However - It just stops working. While having it plugged it, the locomotive just turns off (the light goes out) and nothing happens. With a little bit of finicking (read push/lift/jiggle locomotive) it *May* start up and get going or it'll turn off again. It has been extremely disappointing for my boy and aggravating for dad. Given how beautiful this set it I feel compelled to at least give it a 3 star even though it's mostly just a paper weight now. I'll have to follow Lionel to see where the defect lies.
This train and it's cars will not stay on the tracks.(the cars seem to light). The controller goes dead if a wheel of the train comes off the tracks, which is constant. Hard to enjoy when your time is spent putting railcars on the track.
My son loved the train, however the coupler on the tinder won’t work and we can’t attach any other cars to it. I didn’t want to return it since he likes it so much. I wish I could contact the seller and just get the coupling part.
Was initially very excited by this set, but after a couple weeks of use, the train began to slow/stop in certain sections of the track. I tried cleaning the rails (the dive rails had a very thick black residue from the drive wheel) and tightening the connections on the power rails... No good. Disappointing.
