At first, I was really excited to get this Mandolin because it promised to speed up the dreary job of cutting up vegetables and make them look nice too. I set it up to cut chips according to the manual, cut a sweet potato in half (with a kitchen knife) and began;. Unfortunately the product is so badly designed that it actually takes just as long or longer to chop up the food I expected to be able to slide the the exposed part of the halved sweet potato over the blades with minimal effort. WRONG! I actually had to ask my husband to try it because the blade/s are SO BLUNT you need a lot of force to execute the slicing. Also, the the Grip (or guard) used to hold the vegetable while slicing has protruding spikes for piercing and holding the vegetable inside it BUT they are so far apart that it can only be relied on to "spike and hold large diameter vegetables. In other words it's NOT going to hold carrots or similar sized veg and as the vegetable gets smaller (if you can even get that far on the blunt blade) it becomes too small / narrow to be held by the spikes. This means you have to cut most of the vegetable with a knife anyway or waste it. The other issue with the grip / guard is that it is spring loaded presumably to expose more vegetable to the blade as you continue to slice. UNFORTUNATELY this just had the sweet potato half shooting violently out of the grip every time I raised it up to re-position it at the top of the mandolin (because the blunt blade meant a smooth back and forth action to complete the slicing/chopping is impossible). My toddler came up to me in the kitchen and very nearly got hit in the head by the flying potato and was only saved from concussion by my husband's quick reaction time. I'm so disappointed in this product. I'll be returning it.
I find a mandoline really useful in the kitchen. My last one failed after seven years' regular use and when I looked for a replacement I found this Oxo one. The unit looked well constructed and easy to use. The first thing I made was carrot julienne which worked fine. Then I switched the cutter to batons and tried to make some of those. On the third pass the veg holder (which didn't seem to grip the carrot very well at all) slipped. When I looked at the vertical blades I realised they were very thin and that several of them on one side of the mandoline were so badly bent out of shape that they would longer retract. I'm very disappointed with the poor quality of this unit particularly as I have several Oxo gadgets and they're fine. Back it goes.
Two slices....then noticed that the blade was split apart. The weld holding the blade in place had failed. I will give a better review if the replacement is any better.....not entirely enamoured as the weld does appear to be extremely flimsy so I could see this happening again.
Oh well the replacement came and cut through the first carrot quite well....then the second one went through it and pop.....the exact same problem occurred. This is the very worst mandoline design I have ever seen. Getting the blade out when it’s popped is lethal. If you don’t wear the safety gloves and it pops you are likely to get sliced badly. Look at a cheaper brand, at least you won’t be wasting so much money on one if it does go.
This is very well made and works wonderfully - my cut vegetables now look very exotic. However, I would recommend you also buy mesh safety gloves (kitchen type for preventing cuts) as the blade is extremely sharp and it's all too easy to cut yourself. I would not allow a child to use this product for this very reason.
Used three times and whilst slicing potatoes the blade separated from the slide in attachment and this was really dangerous as it could have sliced off my fingers or flicked around disappointing as Oxo usually excellent quality
I cut a lot of root vegetables including potatoes and carrots. I was hoping that this would be quicker and easier for me to do the cuts. However, in the end, it made more work for me (keep in mind that I only cut one or two of those veggies at a time because I'm only cooking for two). To cut hard items such as potatoes, I found that I had to muscle the tool more than I thought was necessary. Add that effort to the clean up effort, I decided that using a knife was a lot easier, and cost effective for me. The quality of the mandolin was high, and I really wanted to 'like it'. It stores nicely, and is fairly easy to clean. But, at the end of the day, it didn't offer that much time savings for cooking for only two people.
Absolutely hopeless. Tried to slice carrots first of all. The pieces of carrot didn’t slice cleanly and just wedged in the blade. When I gave up and tried on half an onion the blade appeared not to be sharp enough to slice through at all even giving it some ‘oomph’ the onion just wedged itself half way into the blade. I’m returning it.
This is so easy to use and very safe thanks to the large spring loaded food gripper. It is very easy to adjust the slice thickness. I would recommend it for arthritic hands, so much easier than slicing vegetables by hand. All parts go in the dishwasher for cleaning and it packs away safely as there is a lock feature which closes the slicer. Having looked at many other makes I am so glad I chose this one.
This was a replacement. Please see my previous review. Exactly the same happened with the replacement. On trying to slice a potato, the flat blade split from the rest of the blade assembly. It is only attached with four spot welds. The potato went between the two parts of the blade and simply lifted it off splitting the welds. There are too many reviews of the same happening to others to make this worth buying at any price let alone £70.
A great item, well thought out. Inspires a feeling of safety when using it. My previous item was mainly plastic,I was afraid to use it much as it developed a crack and I was expecting it to snap if I put any weight on. No worries with this item, solidly built.
