This well designed device is, unfortunately, quite fragile. In figuring out how to use it I broke it right out of the box. I can probably fix it with super glue, and it did arrive intact, so I'm not going to return it. I should have taken the "delicately designed" phrase in the product description more seriously! Pros: - Folds quite compactly to fit easily in a drawer or cabinet. - Adjustable baffle permits several options for thickness of the slice. - Slot for knife allows the blade to continue past the bottom of the loaf for a clean cut. Cons: - It breaks really easily. - Openings in the loaf support allow crumbs to drop onto the counter. - It really should be used on a cutting board to avoid damaging the knife or scratching the counter. - Did I mention? It breaks. REALLY easily. For the price, I'm not sure I could expect better. But I am disappointed. I can't really recommend it.
I have a Zojirushi bread machine that I use the dough cycle on then bake two loaves in the oven in bread pans. Just my preference as they are the exact size as bread you find in the supermarket (I don’t like the tall bread maker loaves). This slicer is so perfect for me. I use on a rubber mat and even though it moves a little the slices are perfect!
I have 3 issues with this, otherwise I would have given 5 stars. First, the knife slot springs closed at the top so you have to get your fingernail in to pry it open to get the knife in - annoying. Second, the base does not lock at a right angle so if you are not VERY careful, your cut will not be straight. Third, we bought this because we bought a bread maker. I am sure most bread machines are a standard size.. anyway, the loaf does not fit smoothly in the slot. You have to squish it a bit to get it in. So.. I gave 3 stars because the price was right.
I compared several different bread slicers and ended up choosing this one. I'm SO happy that I did because it was cheap AND it does the job perfectly! I make 1 1/2 lb. loaves in my bread machine and the bread fits perfect in the slicer. I was honestly gonna go with a $30 bamboo slicer but that's not even necessary (plus, bamboo tends to split over time). It's good quality and I couldn't be happier with It! I'm hard to please when it comes to kitchen gadgets so trust my review over others lol!
Works great. Does have s very minor defect. May have happened in shipping. The slot for the knife is to close at the top. It came in a padded envelope and it may have caused the problem. Going to try heating it with a blow dryer and separating it some. Revised my review because of a problem I found with this. Often times I make bread with a pretty hard outside. When you cut that kind of bread the blade tends to push the blade out and you get a crooked cut. In order to get around that you cut just until you get past the crust and turn the loaf do the next side then repeat until you have cut all 4 sides then slice it our of the guide. I tried all kinds of things even holding the bread firmly and pushing the one side against the wall and it still cut crooked.
I looked at several types of bread slicer guides. This one was an add on item for $8 something so I figured I’d give it a try. Well I love it. I make bread in my bread maker quite often. Sometimes I have to squeeze the sides of the loaf a bit in order to slide it into the slicer but this has not caused a problem at all. It would be nicer if it was about a half inch wider but as I said it’s really no problem. I’ve made small and medium loafs in my bread making machine. The last medium loaf I made came out as big as the large. It fit as I mentioned above (had to squeeze it in slightly) but no big deal. The slicer guide did not come with directions although it’s not hard to figure out. There is a section that pulls up. This is the size guide. You can move it forward or back to make the slices thinner to thicker. The knife fits between two sections and this holds the knife beautifully. There is a piece that folds down that the bread sits on also and the knife hits when you get to the bottom when cutting the bread. My knife has not damaged this at all and I’ve sliced 3 loafs so far. The only downfall is that the crumbs fall onto the counter. I solved this by putting a cutting board under it then shaking the crumbs off when done. I shake the crumbs off the slicer guide also and wash it once a week. The crumbs fall right off. The piece of bread in the picture for the slicer is probably one notch from the largest slice - so you can get an idea of the slice sizes. There is probably one more notch or take the size guide out and you’ed have an even thicker slice if you like them thick. Anyway, for the price it was a great deal and I absolutely love it!
Folds to store neatly. Our bread maker loaves are a bit too wide so slight trimming allows the loaf to fit. The thinnest setting is similar to a sandwich slice. Four more thicknesses above that. Very good product.
I started baking my own bread and would find that it was hard to get even slices so I thought I'd try this to help. Right out of the box I unfolded it and it broke. It collapses to save space and the part that folds in is held by teeny tiny little platic tabs and that's what did it. It is not unuseable but not worth sending it back. I mean it was only $10. I'll keep it and use it until it doesn't work at all and just toss it. I will definitely be buying a pricier one next time though.
