I wanted another version of this portal (the one with the tail on the backside of the door, ha) but I have a rather substantial cat , so I went with this XL version. Glad I did. Picked up a cheap jigsaw to cut the hole in the door. The template was pretty forgiving of mistakes, just be sure to follow the directions and cut out the ears last. I haven't installed the actual portal yet because the door needs to be painted, but it's definitely big enough for my dude. FYI this is installed on a very narrow (20 inch) hallway door, not a fullsize door.
We have visitors stay at our house often and Kitty likes to hide in our bedroom during visits. In order for kitty to be able to get to his food and litter box, we have to leave the bedroom door open, which is uncomfortable when having guests. Kitty having his own access through the door allows us to keep the door closed when we have guests, and kitty can get out in the night to get his food and do his business as he pleases. We all win! And - it's super cute, to boot! We did purchase a new door and paint it, then install this onto it. That way, if we sell the house, we can put the original door back and it matches the rest of the house doors. Only took about 30 - 45 minutes to install.
When we rented, we had just taken the door off to a closet and placed a shower rod and curtain up to hide the litter boxes. Now that we own, we needed a more permanent solution. The XL sized Purrfect Portal fit the bill. Our largest cat is pushing 20-25 pounds with our smallest around 10 pounds. Everyone fits through the passage and the litter remains hidden behind the closet door. Not recommended if you have small dogs with an affinity for the cat box, but luckily our Silky Terrier doesn't care. At 15 pounds, he would be able to fit through if he had the desire.
Highly recommend this product. Comes with needed hardware to install it. Follow the template to cut out the pattern, place the portal and install the hardware. Put your door back on the hinges and you are good to go. LOVE IT.
If you have the tools necessary to install the Purrfect Portal it's a piece of cake, I installed it in an hour. I did not use the template, I traced around the outside of the larger piece. As you can see I put it in bi-fold doors, centering it on the panels. I bought the large cat portal because this kitten will be big! The portal is for access to his litter box which we put in the laundry room. Also, so Max could have light in a room that will be pitch black at night, I went to Menard's and picked up a rechargeable, motion detector, night light made by Good Earth that I highly recommend and mounted it to the side of the clothes washer at cat height.
Easy to install, easiest if you have the recommended tools. Fits like it was made for the door, seems quite durable (will update if that changes). Our 21-lb cat of DOOOOM fits through the jumbo size with ease; all the cats are diggin’ the door instead of the carpet, (diggin’ means “like”, as in, they like the door and that they’re able to get into and out of the room; they used to literally dig at the carpet to get into our room). Privacy might be a concern (at least for the jumbo size) if you have super curious, little ones and use the entrance for a bedroom door, but nothing that can’t be worked around. We like it, the cats like it, all is right in the world.
One woman's job after work. I was lazy and didn't even take the door off its hinges or use a power saw. I used a marker to outline the pattern and used a hand jab saw to saw off the opening. It worked perfectly and it was easy to screw in the plastic part. I got a fat, smart cat and he knew how to use the opening right away. Wishing I bought this earlier. The dogs are really unhappy without their kitty poop nuggets! Super cute and works well!
The product didnt work out for us as somehow my dog (golden retreiver) was still able to fit her way through... BUT the seller was super easy to work with in getting a refund - although we still have a hole in the door. I am giving 3 stars b/c product says large dogs would be kept out, i guess just be warned if your dog is sneaky and has the will to get through the door its possible. My dog is 80 lbs and i have watched her do it twice already - It looks really cute and i would still encourage people to buy this product, but maybe think twice before getting XL if you are trying to keep a dog out of a certain space.
Original package was missing hardware pkg. They shipped second one. I returned the original back in. I used a jigsaw to cut out. The cover hides any mixed cut or rough edges. I wish they marked which side to attach first. Pretty sure I did backwards try to slide one slightly into other. Worked it out. Definitely large enough hole. My head fits thru. I took a selfie for the wife n I'm sure Facebook after she gets done. My boys used it fairly quickly. It goes to basement, that's where food n litter are. I did XL size more for fact that it's steps downward. Wanted to make sure they could go thru not trip up trying to get that first steep step. There good. Happy with product.☺
I love this cat portal. The design is so cute compared to regular shaped ones, and it was so easy to install. I bought a hand jigsaw from amazon for like $10, and it worked like a charm. Just take your time tracing and cut smaller than the traced image to be on the safe side since you can always go back an enlarge it if it doesn't fit in the door. I had no issues installing. The video I posted has my two small/medium size cats coming through the door, and the photo is my large 19 lbs cat who also fits. I didn't get a video of him coming through, but there's plenty of room for him.
