It’s the strong atmosphere and narrative that makes even non-gamers appreciate this game. I have many friends who generally don’t play much board games but are always willing to play this game. The mechanic is much more akin to Eldritch Horror with some the LCG story structures, and even Pandemic features.
However as a minor point, the game doesn't scale difficulty with low player count very well i.e. 1-2 player is easier, i had to tweak the mythos bag tokens to ramp up the difficulty a bit. 3-4 players is the sweet spot i think.
Overall, it is an awesome game if you don't already own Eldritch Horror. It's a blast of fun with friends for a few hours.
Tried to like this game , for a start it looks great and has some clever stuff that is enjoyable in its own right. Problem is there isn't much for the player to do , you only get 2 actions per turn and the actions you take are a quite obvious,... although different actions become available depending on what cards you have and how the mission progresses, the rest of the time your manage the game AI, if you haven't played a modern boardgame you might be well impressed with it. By the way despite the name it's nothing like 2nd Edition Arkham Horror, it's a different game. Edit : after subsequent plays it's definitely grown on me, it's fun. It's very thematic with invidual stories being driven by codex cards, so there are meaningful decision and branching paths to take. One last word , the graphic design and art in this game is fantastic.
So far i have only played solo. It is tough, it keeps you on your toes trying to juggle between sorting x or progressing y. It does run a touch on the long side, but to be expected from cthuluverse game.
Great game. Very very hard to win. I've played 3 times now and haven't come close. Excellent game. 1 Mythos token a turn would be more doable. I'd give it 5 stars if it was just a little easier. Hard to heal! Great gameplay and storyline. A lot fun and very challenging.
I'm actually surprised this was made. I would have thought the retooling as Eldritch Horror, the App driven Mansions of Madness, and the streamlined Card game version would have crowded this out. Interlocking map pieces help conserve space and the codex (story cards) lend to a more cohesive story. There are a lot of cards however, so this still takes up a lot of space. Recommended for serious gamers that like in depth play and don't mind long playtimes. Lighter groups may want to stick with the great card game version.
Bought Arkham Horror as a graduation present for my sister, who enjoys the game Pandemic so I thought another cooperative game would be good. Arkham Horror was a little too complex for her and my mom, but my boyfriend and I (who also love the game Gloomhaven) enjoyed it. It does take a long time to set up and get a hang of the rules, but once you do turns start moving faster and the storyline picks up.
