Great, but complicated game. You’ll need patience and a decent amount of time to play. The components are well made. The worst part of the game is the lack of storage for the immense amount of components. I dealt with this by removing the inner-box packaging, and buying two hobby box containers that store all the different cards and tokens for ease of access.
I have always been fond of Lovecraftian horror and Arkham Horror was a must buy for me. Game is incredibly thematic, great storyline and offers a bit of replay ability without expansions. However, gameplay mechanics can be a bit slow and heavy at times.
It’s the strong atmosphere and narrative that makes even non-gamers appreciate this game. I have many friends who generally don’t play much board games but are always willing to play this game. The mechanic is much more akin to Eldritch Horror with some the LCG story structures, and even Pandemic features.
However as a minor point, the game doesn't scale difficulty with low player count very well i.e. 1-2 player is easier, i had to tweak the mythos bag tokens to ramp up the difficulty a bit. 3-4 players is the sweet spot i think.
Overall, it is an awesome game if you don't already own Eldritch Horror. It's a blast of fun with friends for a few hours.
Tried to like this game , for a start it looks great and has some clever stuff that is enjoyable in its own right. Problem is there isn't much for the player to do , you only get 2 actions per turn and the actions you take are a quite obvious,... although different actions become available depending on what cards you have and how the mission progresses, the rest of the time your manage the game AI, if you haven't played a modern boardgame you might be well impressed with it. By the way despite the name it's nothing like 2nd Edition Arkham Horror, it's a different game. Edit : after subsequent plays it's definitely grown on me, it's fun. It's very thematic with invidual stories being driven by codex cards, so there are meaningful decision and branching paths to take. One last word , the graphic design and art in this game is fantastic.
