I bought this book a few years ago and it's become one of my firm favourites. The recipes are clear and easy to follow. I don't have a slow cooker but have found them easy to adapt for stove-top cooking. It's true that most of the recipes are for beans and lentils, but these are excellent and I've found they go down equally well with vegans, vegetarians and meat-eaters. The black lentils, south Indian lentils and Dad's rajmah are superb. A satisfied silence descends at the table when meat-eating friends are tucking into the traditional chicken curry or Pakistani 'old clothes' beef curry. Don't baulk at the scarily large quantities of garlic, ginger and chili recommended for some recipes: the lady knows what she's talking about and you won't regret following the detail of the recipe. Portions are extremely generous, but nobody has complained about that!
I am absolutely delighted with this book. I wasn't disappointed with a single recipe, however, I normally reduce chillies and ginger content by 2/3 or I'd not be able to eat them. Among many of my cookbooks this one has the least recipes but I make a use of nearly all of them on a regular basis (unlike with other cookbooks in which case I only really repeat a handful of recipes). It's clear to me that Anupy actually made an effort to pick her very best choices and share only these with the readers, rather than filling the book with many so to attract potential buyers. I also very much like personal introductions to each recipe. At times they were actually helpful in choosing what to pick! Finally, the ingredients are not difficult to get. Even if I barely have some lentils, onions and a bit of garlic (plus spices in the cupboard) – this book will enable me to cook a large meal :)
I wanted to try out one of the recipes before I wrote a review to ensure the recipes are edible and tasty. I made the Black Chickpea Curry, I have tried to cook dried chickpeas before and failed but this recipe was so easy and tasty. I will definitely be trying out all the other recipes. I would highly recommend this book, also be aware that the second edition has all the recipes as in the first edition but just with a few new recipes. I would either buy the first edition or the second edition and not both.
This is the best slow cooker book ever. Or maybe the best curry book ever. In my experience it is both. The meals from this are fabulous, and I feel duly educated on the different types of lentils and pulses around. I had begun to despair of the claim that 'throw it all in slow cooker recipes' could be anything but tasteless, but this book has restored my belief that it can be done.
I LOVE this cook book, though it should be noted I am American and therefore appreciate the American measurements described in this book. Recipes are tasty, easy, clearly described and easy to half for 2-3 people. Half a dozen of these recipes have become my go-to weeknight dinners. Measure out lentils and spices, add water, turn on slow cooker, come home from work to tasty curry! LOVE IT.
I recently received a slow cooker as a present and thought I'd have a bash at curries. I've only tried a few recipes so far, but they were excellent. The 'Old Clothes' beef curry is cooking as I type - smells good ja!!!!! I can highly recommend this book.
I would have rated this a four star, except for the one glaring omission in this collection. The author gives a recipe for what she calls Wet Curry, and it is a fairly time-consuming process. This wet curry is apparently used as the basis for many other curries, and she waxes eloquent about how her mother is thrilled, etc. etc.. However, she then does not give EVEN ONE recipe using this wet curry masala. Not one.
I've tried using it without a whole lot of success. Really, unless you're and Indian cook, how would you know what to do with ? As it is, I'm only guessing.
It's a glaring error, and one that should not have made it past the editor.
