To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.
This product smells rancid & is out of date. Inside the product is a very white powdery substance which I was suspect of in case it was drugs. The expiry date is 5 Jan 2019. They say there is no option for the "return" of this product or refund. Very unfair & not ethical!! Why does Amazon allow this.?
I'm not sure what Nubian did to change their formula, but the new one stinks - literally. I used to love this Shea Butter, it was the only product that made my rough hands feel smooth without the greasy feel. I loved it - I told everyone about it. It used to be smooth and silky going on and I loved the smell. Often times I would just rub it on just for the smell and feel even though I didn't need any - it was long lasting.
This new one is gritty and does not go on smoothly. It was like a bunch of little beads. Ok, I could deal with that once the beads melt, however the smell was rancid. It smelled like the oils went bad. I couldn't use it and had to get a refund. Sadly I am disappointed. After reading all the reviews and my experience, I now have to find something like their old product. Sad for this company to lose so many customers. Hopefully they are listening and do something about it.
I'm a fan of Nubian Heritage's neat parcels of shea butter. Not too big of a size (compared to larger raw shea butters you could get), but it does last a decent amount of time. I've never had a problem melting it down and blending it into the skin. I feel like anyone who complains about the texture or stiffness doesn't know how to use shea butter. To me, what sets Nubian Heritage apart is their scents. I love them, they're confident, strong, herbaceous. I always go with African Black Soap anything but it's definitely it's own kind of African Black Soap smell. The Honey and Nigella Seed is probably my personal favorite, spicy and warm and complex. The Frankincense and Myrrh smells delicious musk to me, but someone at work asked me why I smelled like Vaseline. So, to each their own!
I like this product, it’s of a greasy consistency but absorbs quick into the skin. It really does the job for me, softens and moisturizes the skin. I mostly use it on my hands and cuticles. I gotta say it’s a little bit pricey for the amount that the jar contains (4 ounces only) but I only use it on my hands. The scrub smells way better, and I apply this butter after scrubbing my hands with the sugary scrub made by the same brand with the same scent. In general I’m happy with the product which resembles much the Nubian Heritage Mango Butter which I have been using for quite a while now. I think it’s a great product!
I'm a nurse and my hands are ALWAYS dry and taking a beating. I use shea butter products all the time. This is a generous portion of a very good shea butter product. Yes, this is hard if the temp is cooler, and softer when the temp around the container is higher. Melts quickly with skin temp, luxurious, thick & rich. Products that have a lot of shea butter in them usually are, so reviewers who cut it down because of this fact obviously must not get how shea butter typically is when not emulsified in a cream. This is a highly scented product too.
Why only 4 stars? Well, like I said, this smells DIVINE. The people at my work love it because of the smell and the soft skin it leaves behind when you use it. Smells like something you'd buy at bath and body works which is how good it smells. BUT.. I think it has too much scent. I like to go for wonderful creams for my dry, cracked achy hands, and if it has more scent, or too much scent, it bothers my hands. This has a little too strong of a scent for me. It smells GREAT, but I didn't want it for the smell, I wanted it for the therapy. Too much scent = 4 stars. It is almost overwhelming it is that highly scented.
SO... take it for what it is. It is a good buy, and smells very good and great on hands. Just the scent is too strong for me and my patients. I can't put it on and then go into a patient's room, it is too strong. I wait until after I wash my hands, then apply it when I have a few minutes before I need to see a patient so the smell can dissipates. Some patients have an aversion to strong scents, or it hurts their breathing if they are compromised. Most of my patients like it, but I don't want to take the chance of assaulting one of my patients sense of smell when they are not feeling well. So I'm always careful not to apply this then walk into a room.
The scent is wonderful, like a vacation in a jar! As others have mentioned, it is more papaya than coconut, but both coconut & shea are there as undertones. The product absorbs quickly and leaves very little residue. It does not leave the skin feeling oily, but there can be a slight sort of powdery feel, which is the slightest bit sticky after applying if I use a lot. It is one of the best moisturizers I've tried - works amazing for my hands, feet, elbows & knees, which easily get ashy/flakey in low humidity.
Texture issues & how I solved them:
I first tried this shea butter at a health food store, however they were out of stock of the heavenly smelling Coconut & Papaya, so I ordered it off Amazon (better price here too). In the store the product had a hard, refrigerated butter-like consistency, but melted to the touch. The product I received was opposite in texture. The top layer was mostly solid white, as expected, but as soon as I dipped a finger into the jar, it disintegrated and revealed white chunks of either shea or coconut suspended in a yellow oil, with more of the gritty chunks at the bottom. My product resembled a body scrub compared to what I had tried in store. Based on the ingredients list I'm guessing what happened is the coconut or shea separated from the essential oils.
I fixed this by wrapping the jar in aluminum foil & placing it in a bowl of hot water until the product liquefied, stirring a few times. I waited a few hours for it to cool and then placed it in the fridge overnight. I pulled it out in the morning, and by the evening I found it had the most wonderful whipped-like texture. Keep in mind that this fix may alter/breakdown some of the anti-aging/skin brightening benefits listed on the jar. Since I am using this as a body moisturizer, potentially losing those benefits does not bother me, but if you are concerned about it, heating the product may not be a good solution.
I can't say enough about the Nubian Heritage African Black Soap: I could write about all the ways I have found to use their products. The soap does take a drop or two and be sure to take the time to work up the most soft lather that you have ever had.The bar soap works when the liquid soap is not available. The body lotion I can't get enough of places to use this ultra soft lotion i even use on my lips at night and in the morning when I put on my make up. I have never enjoyed a body line like I do now. I've decide to give all my other body products to the women's shelter in our county. I will NEVER be with any of this product. Hint I had a real hard time getting the body lotion out of the plastic bottle. I cut the top off the plastic bottle and used a long handle spoon to dig it out into a lovely jar that now I can just pop to top off and have it on my vanity. Ladies men once you use just one of their products you will be hooked.
