I bought this cat flap as it’s different and stylish. I’ve recently just had new PVC doors installed so thought I’d treat my lovely black rescue cats to a classy door too!
It is lovely and comes in a snazzy box! I was extremely pleased with it!
This was until my poor cat became trapped in the cat flap and was screaming in pain. Broke my absolute heart! My husband had to break the cat flap to free our cat. Now I’m left with a cat with a sore paw and a new door with a broken cat flap.
There are no circumstances under which I would recommend this product. After months of use we were so happy... until this morning. Our cat pushed to open his door at the bottom the way he always does, but somehow his paw got caught in the bottom with his paw pads half on one side and half on the other. I have never heard a cat howl like that in all of my life. He was in tremendous, excruciating pain and the worst part is the flap door was completely wedged in his pads and could not be pushed or pulled to free him. He completely lost his mind due to the pain and began spinning and freaking out, and as a rest I have a $1700 vet bill for a broken leg. I also have to buy a new entire bathroom door because it was destroyed removing this horrible cat door to free our baby.
AVOID THESE AT ALL COSTS. THEY ARE A DANGER TO YOUR ANIMAL. Our cat could have died if he had been home alone.
We got this door about 6 months ago when my girlfriend moved in with her cats. We installed it in a hollow core door that leads to the storage area where we keep the litter box.
Installation was pretty easy with a jigsaw and screwdriver. Just don't clamp the screws down too tightly or it will restrict door movement.
It took a couple of days to train the cats to use the door, but it was smooth sailing after that. We've been very pleased with the door and the locking mechanism.
Then yesterday it became a problem. Apparently, the cats were playing and swatting at each other. One of the cats went through the door and the other swatted through the opening. The door closed on the cat's paw. The harder she pulled on it, the tighter the door closed.
After many scratches and bites we were able to free the cat from the accidental trap. Her paw is swollen to about twice the size of the other and she can't walk on it. Looks like we're breaking coronavirus quarantine to take a cat to the hospital in the morning.
Tldr; door is cute and we'll made, but has the potential to injure your pet. 0/10 don't recommend.
