If you have done leather work before then you can make these tools work. If you are a true beginner save your money. The waxed thread is descent, the needles and the pricking irons are really poorly made. The needles have milled to a fine finish so your lacing thread will get frayed and your leather project could be nicked by the unfinished nature of the metal needles. The 4mm pricking irons are not finished milled either. When you hammer into your leather the iron is almost impossible to remove because the all of the inner edges of the tines are rough and jagged. I work with metal so I will be able to make these work but save yourself some agony and pay extra for some proper pricking irons. This is poor craftsmanship and will damage your leather project if you don't know how to finish and then sharpen the tines on these irons.
About ¾ of the way into my first project with these tools, the fork teeth bent. I’m not even trying to go all the way through, so this soft metal is bending just by going through leather. Even the back of the fork is deforming from being tapped with a hammer. Two stars for the needles and thread, but the stitch hole forks are garbage.
Update: Reduced to one star because the needles are very soft metal as well. I’ve gone through three needles to complete this small, simple project. Absolute trash.
I had never done any sort of leather sewing before, but I figured if I was going to get into leather crafting, I should start doing some. So I ordered this kit and used to see designs as well as sew pieces of leather together. It was slightly more difficult than regular clothes sewing, but that is too be expected because, you know, it's leather. Anyway, without any sort of guide I was able to sew the pieces shown in the pictures, which I thought turned out pretty well for a first attempt. The actual thread has a waxxy consistency, which actually makes it easier to handle.
I bought this originally to stitch together a leather seat cover for an ottoman i made. I wasn’t sure how well it would work but the price was right so I went ahead and bought this kit. It comes with eight heavy duty threads, hole punches and heavy duty sewing needles. II have already made a few leather pouches as a test and now I’m working on the ottoman. Easy to use, durable and overall a great kit to get started with.
The only thing worth using in this kit is the thread. It is good and waxy and has good color choices. Otherwise, I would not recommend. The needles are massive and will not go through the holes that the punches make unless you use an awl to widen the holes. The punches were poorly made and impossible to get out of the leather even with beeswax. The jagged edges inside the teeth were like barbs on a hook and made them incredibly difficult to use. After first use the six prong punch had all the teeth bent and misaligned, rendering it useless. You get what you pay for with this kit, it is cheap for a reason. If you are sewing anything thicker than 2.5-3oz leather I would not recommend this kit.
The punches needed a lot of work to get them smooth, the front and back were smooth but the inner edges were not so it was very hard to remove from 4/5 oz leather. The thread was marginal quality( not tiger thread) but useable.
I used this to repair a strap on my wife's purse. I covered the original strap with leather and used the punch and thread in the kit to do that. The punch worked but the tines easily bent out of shape although I was able to bend them back and make it work. If you are planning to do a lot of leather work I would look for a stronger punch set.
The product arrived 06102020 well in advance of the estimated arrival time. This product is for for the job. No overkill, and if you have any common sense. The cost of the same product with a case seemed pricey to use. So we decided to forgo the case and get this for a cheaper price. Found a cardboard box and bobs your uncle no case needed.
Super kit for me, I've never sewn leather before. Everything I needed to begin is in this kit. The threads are great colors and sturdy. Good selection of needles and the poker things make holes that are perfectly lined up.
