We have two cats, one is highly motivated by food while the other doesn't care about food at all. Due to this, we decided to buy this expensive unit so he could eat in peace. It seems that in order to enable intruder mode you have to email Sure Petcare and they email you back a list of instructions that don't match up with what the pet feeder has. I think they might have supplied instructions for an older unit (non-connect version??).
Either way, it's hard to set up and we haven't got it working yet plus our cat is suspicious of it.
Hopefully we'll get up and running at some point and learn how to enable intruder mode so his food doesn't get stolen. The app is really slow and cumbersome too which is a shame as it looks ok.
We purchased the Microchip bowl in the past and are very happy with it. We purchased another Microchip bowl and a Connect bowl and unfortunately I was not aware you needed to spend another 100+ dollars to buy the hub to make it work to its full potential. I am not spending more money on a hub. I was going to return this bowl and just order another of the regular bowls but it costs return shipping. I am better off just keeping this connect bowl and using it like i use the other ones. Seems a real shape to have spent extra money for extra features you cant even use unless you buy the hub too. Ridiculous.
We have two of these feeders, one for each of our cats. Our smaller cat is quite short, and the feeder works fine for her. The motion sensors detect her, her chip is scanned, and the cover opens when she approaches.
For our senior kitty, the motion sensors do not pick her up as she is taller and longer than her younger sister. This means the feeder cover will not scan her chip until she bends down and is completely inside the unit with her chip under the reader bar.
SurePet Customer Service claims her microchip must have migrated, and said the unit would work perfectly if we switched to their RFID tag. We added the tag to her collar and programed it in, but unfortunately, it's the same issue all over again, because the problem is with the motion sensor, NOT with the range of the chip reader. The motion sensor still cannot see her approach, so even with the RFID tag, she has to have her head all the way in the feeder unit so that her neck is directly underneath the reader bar. With both the microchip and the tag, the feeder door can't open unless she's completely inside, meaning the cover hits her face when it opens. Understandably, she refuses to eat from it unless the cover is set to "Open", which renders the feeder pointless. The whole purpose of the feeder is that other pets cannot eat each other's food, and both our cats are on separate diets for different conditions.
I covered the sensors with painters tape so the chip reader is constantly scanning, but that didn’t help either. I contacted Sure Petcare and was eventually told the unit can be put into “Extended Range Mode”, but it has to be done on Sure’s end as there are no advanced settings options on the app and no slide switch on the Connect version of the feeder. ERM did help marginally with the unit opening a bit sooner, but my cat’s head still needs to be in further than she’s comfortable with for it to open. I’ll give it another week, but I may need to return it if she can’t use it comfortably.
If SurePet can adjust their motion sensors, this would be a 5-star product. But as it currently is, my cat (and many other larger cats, based on other reviews) cannot use it, so it's basically a $180 paperweight.
So first I'll say I love the product so far. It works without a collar as long as the cat is chipped. Now the bad. The photos and video is misleading product does not come with the Hub. I paid $30 more thinking hub was included. After looking again, after I received it, the product description says (not included) but based on the photos it shows all the things this can do. This is borderline false advertisement. Kind of messed up this trick was done by the company that makes the product and not even done by third party sellers. They had the decency to not try this.
