This docking station works like a charm. Fully plug and play. I have an HP Envy laptop and was told by HP support that only an HP docking could charge the laptop from the USB C port. This Dell docking does it, so I am a happy camper. Fully recommend.
The little piece of plastic inside the USB port broke off the first time I used it. Happened about 2 months after I purchased it, so just after the refund/replace period ended. Planned obsolescence at its finest.
I swear thunderbolt 3 is a scam. 2 displays at 4k 60hz my ass. Even HDMI doesn't work. I used this dock with a Dell 7480 laptop with 6th gen i7, intel hd 520, 16 GB ram and thunderbolt 3 port (Not usb c only) and this laptop was on the list of recommended laptops from dell for this specific dock. I wanted to connect both my 4k 60hz screens via display port to this dock and plug this dock into the TB3 port on my dell 7480 laptop.
All the other ports work but to get video to output is like pulling teeth. So many issues getting multiple displays to work. When plugged in displays show up in the configuration menu but you can't enable or set resolution for them. Unplug one screen, and then video outputs at 1080p 30hz, plug in the other display and both go out. I plugged my TB3 macbook pro in just make sure it's not the dell laptop but the mac was having the same issue the dell laptop was facing.
I asked one of the IT guys who works with a lot of dell laptops at the company I work at and he says that they never found a TB3 dock that can output to multiple displays reliably. TB3 is just not ready.
DO NOT BUY THIS IF YOUR INTENT IS TO OUTPUT TO MULTIPLE DISPLAYS OVER TB3
Best way to output video from laptop to multiple displays is each displays connect to a display output port on laptop. 1 display per port. TB3 is a scam.
It only gets 2 stars because it looks nice and everything else works.
First day review of WD 19 dock with XPS 13 9380. I have had nothing but dock issues following the latest 9380 BIOS update. Problems include intermittent connection to monitor, failure to work properly with a simple USB switching hub, and computer shutting down repeatedly requiring force restart. I followed all instructions when connecting this new dock and had the same issues. Then I came across this article:
Dell USB-C and Thunderbolt Docks (WD15, TB16, TB18DC, WD19, WD19TB, WD19DC, D6000) - BIOS Settings and Driver Installation for Troubleshooting This article will guide you through the installation and basic troubleshooting process for Dell USB-C and Thunderbolt Docking Stations WD15, TB16, TB18DC, WD19, WD19TB, WD19DC, and D6000. Last Modified:13 Mar, 2020 Article ID:SLN308303
I followed the instructions to update the BIOS settings, and the dock now works properly. Be advised that NOT all of the options mentioned are available in the 9380 BIOS including “enable USB power share” and “allow USB-C dock support”. For now, the dock is working. I did need to plug the USB switching hub into the front USB port on the dock. I hope this helps and good luck. DELL could be a bit more clear about these issues.
These USB-C docks are bulletproof. They "just work". Plus, this model is a LOT cheaper on Amazon than directly from Dell, and plus it ships a lot faster. Dell shipping is 5-10 business days. Amazon is 1. It's a no-brainer.
The beauty of this docking station is it both powers your laptop and does the "data" connection for all your connected peripherals over one single cable. You don't need to plug electricity into your laptop AND the USB-C cable; you just plug in the USB-C cable and it does it all!! No messy double-cables or anything. Definitely worth it.
