Was there a point ti making this movie?

This movie while engaging as all Tarrantino efforts are still left me wondering what the point of it was. I am a fan of Tarrantino movies because they reach the exaggerated proportions of Greek mythology much as the Italian spaghetti westerns did. Yet, this work failed me. The Tate murders were horrific, to say the least, and this movie made light of them.
Furthermore, I doubt whether Sharon Tate was the type of bimbo as portrayed in the movie. In fact, why use an actual tragic event to portray the adventures of fictional characters?
This movie left me wondering what the point of making it in the first place was. Of course, if Tate and the others had survived because the crazy hippies got another address where badasses confronted them then what impact would it have had on Roman Polanski's career as a director and that of Sharon Tate, and by extension their contribution to the Hollywood movie industry? Now that should have been explored to give this movie more meaning.
