I really wanted to like this based on the reviews. My daughter and I have decided this year to try out bar shampoos and conditioners. To best test efficacy, I only switched out my usual conditioner for this conditioning bar. As many reviewers have noted, you have to be sure to really pull the bar along the hair strands: it isn't going to make a big lather to work through for conditioning, like you might have with typical conditioner. After many uses I finally found that making a rubbing motion as I moved down handfuls of strands worked the best. I let the conditioner sit for several minutes before rinsing out. The softness generally seemed to evaporate as soon as I rinsed it out. My hair was quite a bit frizzier than normal: I'm a wash and go gal with long, thick medium curly hair. I just let it air dry, but I do typically use a balm. I needed to use more product to manage my hair than usual.
Overall, I can't say I would recommend this specific bar but I like the concept and will be sure to try other ones.
The first conditioner bar I bought was super small, which was super annoying. So, I was glad to see that this one gave a bit more product. I had to pay a few dollars more for it but the value is still there.
I saw several complaints about taking too long to lather. It’s a conditioner bar. They ALL take a long time to lather. This one was no exception. I don’t have a problem with it. It seems like a minor trade off to reduce your plastic usage and there is zero plastic with this product.
After a shower, while my hair is still wet, the Reef Safe conditioner bar tends to leave my hair feeling waxy, which makes it a little difficult to brush. However, as my hair dries, it softens up really nice. For shoulder length or longer hair, this bar might prove to be a challenge for you. It will probably be fine for shorter hair.
I think for the money, the Reef Safe conditioner bar provides a fair value. I would probably buy it again. However, if a comparably priced and sized conditioner bar was out there, I might try it as an alternative. If you want to reduce your plastics usage, I would consider trying this conditioner bar first.
I love the concept of this conditioner bar to reduce plastic and waste. It's great that it is all natural and reef friendly. Overall, it does leave my thick, color-treated hair feeling soft, detangled, and adequately moisturized. The user experience is not great since the bar is pretty stiff and you do have to rub it and work it into your hair, but I kind of expected that going in. The smell is light, citrusy, and pleasant.
I really want to love it and keep using it, but there is an issue... just know there is a chance that mold can grow on this conditioner bar. I stored mine in a silicone box lined with a "soap saver" that lifts up the bar and helps with ventilation and drainage. One time I grabbed the bar to use in the shower and noticed blue fuzzy mold was growing on it :/ . So I washed the conditioner bar with soap and got rid of a layer hoping that takes care of it. Thought it was an issue with keeping it in the box, so I stored it right on the shower shelf (better ventilation) and it still grew mold. Maybe it is too natural. I don't think I'll repurchase unless it's possible for them to reformulate with a preservative of some sort. Give it a try if you're curious, but make sure you can keep it away from humidity!
So far I'm on the fence about it. I'm more of a apple cider vinegar rinse kinda girl. I wanted 2 change it up a lil bit and I love it is reef safe. The only down fall so far is it seems 2 leave my hair a lil dry afterwards. Could just be my type of hair tho. It's a nice sized bar and I love the smell. I'll keep using 2 see if my review changes but so far I'd buy it again just cuz its reef safe andi can use it at the beach.
I was really excited for this conditioner bar but now after having used it, I don't consider it to be very good. I'm a white woman in my early thirties with really fine, long hair. My hair felt no different between before application to application. It didn't feel like anything was in my hair at all. Ever. I think I may have gone through it rather quickly because I would keep trying to get enough in my hair to feel it and be able to comb thru my hair with my fingers for even application. Combing through my hair after it was well applied was rather difficult in accordance to how conditioners usually work. In theory, its fantastic for being so eco-friendly, which is what I absolutely love, but in actual use, it just didn't work for me.
I wanted to like this but meh...it didn’t really condition my hair at all...the scent is great and sweet and I like that it is eco friendly but it did not seem to work well for my long thick color treated hair. It left it dry and unmanageable...It might be good for a young child or baby though...it might also be good for a man or woman with very short uncolored hair too. Like I said It didn’t work for my long thick puffy highlighted hair though.
