I really wanted to like this based on the reviews. My daughter and I have decided this year to try out bar shampoos and conditioners. To best test efficacy, I only switched out my usual conditioner for this conditioning bar. As many reviewers have noted, you have to be sure to really pull the bar along the hair strands: it isn't going to make a big lather to work through for conditioning, like you might have with typical conditioner. After many uses I finally found that making a rubbing motion as I moved down handfuls of strands worked the best. I let the conditioner sit for several minutes before rinsing out. The softness generally seemed to evaporate as soon as I rinsed it out. My hair was quite a bit frizzier than normal: I'm a wash and go gal with long, thick medium curly hair. I just let it air dry, but I do typically use a balm. I needed to use more product to manage my hair than usual.
Overall, I can't say I would recommend this specific bar but I like the concept and will be sure to try other ones.
This was my first conditioner bar and I’m happy to say it really works. My hair is pretty healthy, but the ends still get tangled and matted so I need something in the shower to get the knots out. This gives slip and doesn’t weigh my hair down. My hair looks soft and shiny after using it. It also smells really good. I wish Reef Safe made a shampoo bar with this scent. If you have super dry hair this conditioner might not work for you. Sometimes I still get out my Puracy conditioner when my hair is really bad. No plastic upon delivery, just a paper box. Love this conditioner, I’d repurchase.
This conditioning bar is so great! It is very moisturizing with a mild but nice scent. Have fine hair with a hint of curl. This works best letting hair air dry for a natural look. But can also be used before heat treatment like blow drying or curling. Leaves hair a little oily so I found it best to use just on hair and not on scalp. And bonus points for being eco friendly. I like that I could use it outdoors or at the beach and it's a safer option.
This works really well! You have to get it worked into a good lather and leave it in for a few minutes, but it turns out feeling and looking really nice on my hair. I usually would have to put in some kind of leave-in after my regular conditioner, but I don't have to do this with this stuff. My hair feels sooooo soft and fluffy after. Thank you for a great product!!!
Arrived in time for Christmas. Got it for my daughter who has recently become very aware of the amount of plastics used and wasted everyday. She had asked for more conditioner and insisted on not getting a bottle. As a surprise I thought this brand would be perfect in her stocking. No plastic in any packaging and it smells great!
The first conditioner bar I bought was super small, which was super annoying. So, I was glad to see that this one gave a bit more product. I had to pay a few dollars more for it but the value is still there.
I saw several complaints about taking too long to lather. It’s a conditioner bar. They ALL take a long time to lather. This one was no exception. I don’t have a problem with it. It seems like a minor trade off to reduce your plastic usage and there is zero plastic with this product.
After a shower, while my hair is still wet, the Reef Safe conditioner bar tends to leave my hair feeling waxy, which makes it a little difficult to brush. However, as my hair dries, it softens up really nice. For shoulder length or longer hair, this bar might prove to be a challenge for you. It will probably be fine for shorter hair.
I think for the money, the Reef Safe conditioner bar provides a fair value. I would probably buy it again. However, if a comparably priced and sized conditioner bar was out there, I might try it as an alternative. If you want to reduce your plastics usage, I would consider trying this conditioner bar first.
I’ve been pleasantly surprised with this product. I’ve only used it twice so far and not sure I’ve hit the sweet spot of using it. It applies well — I only manage to get the thinnest layer on but my hair is soft and feels moisturized after I rinse it and it dries. The scent is mild, which is good because I’m not sure how wild I would be about tangerine scent at a stronger level. I can’t smell it much after my hair dries.
I love the concept of this conditioner bar to reduce plastic and waste. It's great that it is all natural and reef friendly. Overall, it does leave my thick, color-treated hair feeling soft, detangled, and adequately moisturized. The user experience is not great since the bar is pretty stiff and you do have to rub it and work it into your hair, but I kind of expected that going in. The smell is light, citrusy, and pleasant.
I really want to love it and keep using it, but there is an issue... just know there is a chance that mold can grow on this conditioner bar. I stored mine in a silicone box lined with a "soap saver" that lifts up the bar and helps with ventilation and drainage. One time I grabbed the bar to use in the shower and noticed blue fuzzy mold was growing on it :/ . So I washed the conditioner bar with soap and got rid of a layer hoping that takes care of it. Thought it was an issue with keeping it in the box, so I stored it right on the shower shelf (better ventilation) and it still grew mold. Maybe it is too natural. I don't think I'll repurchase unless it's possible for them to reformulate with a preservative of some sort. Give it a try if you're curious, but make sure you can keep it away from humidity!
