After struggling for 15 minutes with ordinary pliers to open the gold link on a particularly un-cooperative bicyle chain I though I'd be extravagant and buy Park Tool MLP-1.2 Master Link Pliers. I'm glad I did because now the job is ridiculously easy. I may only have to do it about once or twice a year but worth it just for that. Their videos for bike maintenance are so slick, professional and helpful I was happy to support them by purchasing their branded product as a "thank you" but when it arrived I was, however, a bit disappointed by the quality of the tool itself which really doesn't look especially well made.
Usual Park Tool quality, and makes chain fitting/repair/maintenance so much easier. In fact they make it possible, and the quicklink many chains use are extremely difficult to set in place otherwise. Too big for the trail tho' - you are back to repairing links around the quick link I guess in these cases, and popping pins.
If you have a masterlink chain you need these to get the chain off - they turn an almost impossible job into one that takes a second. (Some link types you squeeze the sides between your fingers then push the rivets together - these are possible to get off by hand. The other types - I've never done it without this tool.
Park tools are obviously more expensive then many by the old adage pay cheap pay twice is very true and I’ve made some rotten buys in the past for cycle tools. Not a lot more to say about this tool - it Hyatt works!
Removing a quick link without this can be near impossible, this tool made the job simple, almost too simple! As it's a part tool I'd expect it to last a lifetime, especially considering how often I'd expect to use it.
Perfect tool for the job. You can connect / disconnect master links without a tool like this... but this makes it so much cleaner/easier. It should last a lifetime, so a good investment for any toolkit
