This is great especially for beginners like me. In the few weeks that I’ve had it learned the majority of the notes in first position so well that I don’t even have to look at the fretboard any more to know what they are. I have two cons to the sticker however: if you pull it too hard it breaks off easily, so definitely be careful when installing or else your sticker will basically fall apart. Also, Not all stickers will be as accurate to each violin I’ve come to learn. Although I was in the right area as far as notes, I still needed a tuner in order to learn the exact placement of the note for my specific violin. Each violin is different with different specs which is why sometimes a sticker will be slightly off as far as tune. But overall a good experience!
I hadn't picked up or played my violin in almost 20 years. So when the pandemic hit and I had nothing better to do, I decided to revisit and relearn this amazing instrument. After nearly 2 decades I have pretty much forgotten everything and needed references for finger positions. This product popped up and I decided to give it a try.
I learned violin in an age where all teachers were using colored tape to mark positions...and while tape gets the job done, I felt this finger guide is way more comprehensive and accurate.
The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is my experience with the application. Despite following the provided instructions, it was difficult to adjust the sticker into the right position because even if a little bit sticks, it's hard to move around due to the curvature of the fingerboard and strings and the tightness of the top of the instrument, I eventually had to get a toothpick to get the sticker off the board.
Application would have been much easier if the the sticker backing was divided into 3 pieces where the first piece only exposes a little bit of the sticker so that we can set the anchoring the point properly, and the subsequent pieces can be peeled off to either side after the correct anchor point is established.
Overall a great product! Though the application needs improvement, I love the idea and the ingenuity and wholeheartedly recommend this to anyone learning the violin.
I should have removed my strings to install this, my installation is a teensy bit crooked, but not enough to make the notes wrong. Also, at the angle a violin sits, it is actually difficult to see the markings. Playing when the sticker is installed didn't seem to change sound quality.
This is a great product in theory. Clearly marked, easy to install. If you are holding the violin at the correct angle, however, you will not actually be able to see the lettering to tell what you're about to play. You can still see the marks where you should be pressing the string but won't be able to read the letter to tell you what note it is...you still need to memorize those fingering charts I'm afraid.
As an adult beginner, this finger board guide was very simple to understand. It applied well. The only drawback, is that it is hard to see the placements because of the glare from the vinyl. I believe that if bright colors had been used, it would have been much easier to see from the angle / placement of your chin and eyes. As a result, I am going to add colored electrical tape over the vinyl, until I get the positions memorized.
My finger guide didn't fit that well even though it was the right size. It just meant the strings weren't perfectly aligned but it still served its overall purpose. It's a bit hard to see at times but it's nice for learning where to properly position your fingers as well as helping you understand how pitch works
